TS Performance chip and PMR rods

Good morning everybody,

I have an 02 7.3 with what I believe is a TS Performance chip installed (could be a Bully Dog). When I test drove it, I put it on the highest setting and the CEL came on. I keep it all the way to the left which is factory. I have no other mods on the truck. Do you guys think my PMR rods could be or have been damaged by running the chip wide open?

When the CEL came on did that prevent too much fuel from being dumped through the injectors?

Good morning! I have the same year (‘02) and I installed the TS-6 on mine. For a stock motor the PMR rods are fine (would rather have forged but……..)

The rotary knob looks like a TS, or similar. When I first tried out mine, several years ago I switched over to the high setting (140+) and the CEL came on, but was only a soft code as after turning the truck off and restarting the CEL stayed off. (I have since troubleshooted and checked DTC’s with AE and nothing related)

Whether overboost or fuel demand I had read that this wasn’t uncommon, and that a stock 7.3 motor will not benefit from the high setting.

Whoever bought the tuner had options in selecting tunes, my six positions are Stock, High Idle, 50+ tow, 75+ strip/ tow, 100+ strip, and 140 strip. The only three I ever use anymore are High Idle, 50+, and 75+

If your CEL didn’t come back on then it was a soft code, if it is staying on, (or it you want to pull the memory of the soft code) you will have to run AE or ForScan to pull the DTC with its’ number to look it up.

On another, but separate note - buy yourself a genuine Ford CPS from a Ford dealer or Riffraff and keep it in your glovebox.

i'd pull the check to see what it is.
If you're fine with how it drives then run whatever it is.

if you think you want more power then do research on custom tune options.

i'd be more worried about my trans running unknown tunes

THANK YOU BOTH! The only time(s) the CEL came on was when I switched it to the highest setting when I test drive it. BUT, when I switched it back to stock, 20 seconds later, the CEL was off. I’m keeping it set to stock if I don’t remove it. The only performance upgrades are the tuner and an exhaust. I don’t know that I’m putting 400 to the wheels and may be able to make that at the flywheel. The truck only has 119k on it. It’s in really great shape and I just wanted to keep it that way. You guys have given me some peace of mind and I appreciate all of your input!

Do you have gauges?
Don't be afraid of using the chip. It can be beneficial.
The high idle can be useful in the event you jump start someone or to aide in warming up. The tow tune should improve towing performance while towing and help the transmission....and if you feel like you might enjoy a little more spice, the 75/ daily tune is all you would need.

it's been forever since I ran a TS style chip and had a CEL, but IIRC its an overboost indication. Nothing to worry about

The reason why I mentioned gauges is because that is usually the first thing to add when adding a chip.

I just figured since you already have the chip, you could utilize it's benefits ;)

IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THE CHIP SETTINGS ARE, you should pull it out and have someone test it and tell you. Keep the position settings somewhere for reference.

It probably has the standard tunes...Stock, High Idle, Tow, 75 Daily, 100 Performance, 120/140 Extreme IIRC
As long as you/PO have been safe and monitored EGT's there's nothing wrong with them and they will not hurt your engine/ PMR rods...definitely won't hurt your rods, not even close.

I ran my PMR's on 250/100's and a 369SXE pushing 550 or so HP and tons of torque for years. It wasn't until 2018 when I ran new tunes from 1023, SDK, GH that finally put a rod through the block....and it was probably the 1023 or SDK tunes that sent the rod.

Your tranny will have issues before your engine if you are hot rodding around. Being you have left it on stock setting, no issues.I'd get at least an EGT gauge or get a CTS3 with the package that comes with necessary items if you want to use the other settings.

Oh, if you run it on the top 3 settings, most likely you will need a boost fooler of some sort. I'm almost certain that's why you get the CEL for a little while.

Did the CEL come on as soon as you switched to the 6 position, or after testing the power. If the CEL goes off without switching the ignition off, its most likely an overboost code, if not probably a 1211 ICP code, which is because the tune is asking for more pressure than the pump can supply.

As far as the tunes on the chip go, there is no way for TS or any other tuner to know what is on the chip without sending it to them.

Is “Jelibuilt” reputable?
Yes.
Your go to guys now(no particular order) are Jelibuilt, Gearhead, Andrew Arthur, DP tuner. Or PHP tunes

I didn't even pay attention to that...talk about a blast from the past. Bill was supposed to get me a tune from Tony many many moons ago, but never got the chance to run one. He was and probably still is one of the best

I dont mean to put anyone down even one of the og tuners, but I had a ts chip that was burned by Tony and the tunes were way too hot, I had to run the daily tune to tow anything or egt would get extremely hot. I once saw 1500 degrees for a split second with my 94 before I intercooled it. Im sure I still have the emails from back when I was running that setup. Tunes were fun but just too aggressive for anything other than just driving it as a daily.

so what tunes are you using now? Makes sense that a hot tune used for towing would get too hot, that's why they make to tunes.

Also looking at your sig, It explains a lot. I plan to try a tune or few from Tony. Tuning has evolved a bit since the old days as well. There will always be people that loves someones tunes and there will be some that don't like their tuning, just the way the world works.

From what I remember way back, Tony's tunes were similar to Bills (PHP) but slightly more aggressive. I am not sure how his tuning is today but we will find out

From my experience all tuners are similar anymore, as far as overall power and things go.

Back before I got PHP tunes, I had DP tunes. They were hot and super aggressive. you got all power within the 1st 1/2 throttle or so. I liked it at first but learned that I hated it and preferred Bills tuning. Jody's tuning is way better and more linear now, with no EGT issues...or considered normal for upgraded sticks. I have a high altitude tune from Jody for my 250/ 100's It's a great file.

But I'm currently playing with 200/30 injectors

Even with the tow tune it was too hot. I dont own that truck anymore, I have a 2002 f350 now which is world's ahead in the comfort department stock vs stock.
oh okay...I also didn't pay attention to it being a 94 🤦‍♂️
Did you get the tune I sent?
Yes, I got it...sorry been busy and I sent you an email not long ago. I will get it loaded and tested in the next couple few days and let you know my thoughts.
