Transmission coolers, external or integrated into the radiator?

I may have this in the wrong place, mods please feel free to move this if it's not in the right subforum.

I'm contemplating installing an external cooler on my 03 just to help keep transmission fluid temps at a safe level. Is there any argument against an external cooler vs the integrated unit in the radiator?

Naturally, my reasoning is that helping keep trans temps down as much as possible while staying at a healthy operating temp is never bad, especially if I intend to pull anything behind this truck. I might once in awhile need it to pull a trailer with a skid steer or maybe something like a small boom lift for some stuff at home. Probably nothing much more than that at most. But still, keeping temps safe is my thinking. And I just happen to like modifying when it helps longevity.

You already have both.

A very common upgrade it to remove the 9 row external cooler that came with the truck and install the 30 or 36 row (?? I believe) that came with the 6.0 trucks. The bigger cooler is far superior and a few suppliers like RiffRaff have it as a kit with everything you will need for the install.

I put in the 36 row cooler and it really keeps the temps down on my E99 F250. If I had to do it over again, I think I would go with the 30 row cooler. The reason was the as part of the install there are 2 support straps that I had to modify so the 36 row cooler wouldn't rub against the straps at the top corners of the cooler. I had to notch the strap and it cut about 1/2 way through the strap. I really hated to grind on the straps and weaken them. I think the 30 row would have passed under the straps. I only need about a 1/2 of height difference.

I did what @Jimmy's Pilot Service said to my '01. One of the best mods I've done. Dropped temps a LOT! My lines run through the radiator, up through the 31-row cooler and back to the trans.
Look down between the AC Condensor and the radiator. Will probably need to remove the top cover between the grille and the radiator support to be able see down there.

There's no doubt that the Stock cooler is Way Undersized and the reason that Ford made such a drastic change for the 6.0

Whether to continue to run the fluid thru the Radiator or not is a minor consideration I think. If you live in a climate where it gets pretty Cold you might be more inclined to leave it to aid in warming the fluid more than cooling it in the very cold. If it never gets that cold where you are, bypass it, why make it 180*F and then cool it down again ;)

Some 7.3s didn’t have the integrated radiator cooling from factory, mine was one of them. Personally I would put on a 6.0 cooler and remove the radiator cooling, it’s one less issue to worry about. There’s no chance coolant will ever get into your trans if you remove it
