TOW HAUL or NOT?

Ok, I just bought a 2007 F550 crew cab Lariat hauler truck to pull a huge living quarters horse trailer with and I have a question on the tow haul.

I have a few of these trucks as wreckers and dump trucks but never used one to tow this much weight with and trying to find out IF I should use the tow/haul while towing all the time or just in town or what? The other truck I have used the last 12 year is a 2007 Ram 3500 6.7 that has been fully deleted with a tow tune since I bought it new. I went to a F650 but wife wouldn't drive it, so I found this F550 with ultra ride susp. and bigger brakes than my Dodge and she love it. I just want do what ever is best for the truck while towing. This truck does have 4.30 gears NOT the 4.88 gears and the loaded weight of the trailer is right around 20k lbs.!

I pull a 28k trailer with my 6.0. I turn off tow/haul when I want it to shift into overdrive. It usually won’t shift into 6th anyway, unless on flat ground and about 70mph. But I have 3.73 gears. With 4.30, you will be in 6th if you want to be. I always turn tow/haul back on when slowing/stopping, or on winding roads or downhills. Use it when you want it. It won’t hurt the trans

From Mark K 5r110 engineer
Normally the 5R110 shifts 1-2-3-5-6. When the trans is colder than 0F is shifts 1-2-3-4-6.

If the truck is at a speed that is just above the maximum speed to downshift to 3, if you were to floor the go pedal it will shift to 4 instead of 5. This gives a bit more acceleration than if it went to 5. From 4 it can only to to 6 or to any lower gear. It can never shift 4-5.

The overdrive unit is in front and has a 1:1 ratio and a 0.71:1 ratio.
The three speed behind the overdrive unit has 3.11:1, 1.54:1, and 1:1.

First 1:1 times 3.11:1 = 3.11:1
Second 0.71:1 times 3.11:1 2.2:1
Third 1:1 times 1.54:1 = 1.54:1
Fourth 071:1 times 1.54:1 = 1.096:1
Fifth 1:1 times 1:1 = 1:1
Sixth 0.71:1 times 1:1 = 0.71:1

Zmann is correct(provided correct info).
Until the trans warms up(about 2 shift cycles, haha) it uses 4th. After that it goes 3-5 and skips fourth. Odd, but it is what it is.

Only when < 0 F though, right?

It does only use 5 of the 6 gears for shifts, ...I think he is counting the torque converter lock as the last speed -- which is kind of right -- not a gear, but it is a speed

I had an 06 F350 with the 6.0 and pulled a 14K 5W with it. I found in hills it wanted to seek gears at times and I would then us tow haul. I talked with a local mechanic who's advice was always use tow haul when towing, it changes the shift pattern and it will hold gears longer. He said the engine will never over speed as the ECM will not let the engine self destruct, worked for me until I sold it. X4 SCT set to tow and EGR delete only other wise all stock.

I am a firm believer in TH, it definitely helps me slow the truck. My truck is a 06 F350 DRW, I use it transport hay and my D4 dozer. I definitely overload this truck on a regular basis but, Texas Farm Tags help me get around the weight issues. She does fine with about 18k to 21k without TH on traveling average speed of 75 Columbus back to Houston. I prefer to use TH when I can remember to turn it on, the truck definitely shifts better and performs better over all. This is definitely a hot button topic in my circle, the 7.3 guys say I am supposed to turn it on while trying to get up to speed then turn it off while cruising at highway speeds. All I know is that my truck accelerates, shifts and stops better using TH.

This device doesn't go through your OBD, if that is your concern. I don't know how an SCT monitor works. This device taps into some wiring under the hood.. I had their previous version of an exhaust brake that uses a butterfly valve where the cat was, powered by an under the hood compressor. This new one is way better, utilizing the variable vane geometry to supply the back pressure.

My question is:

If one has specific tow tunes and installs the BD shifter, does this in any way conflict with tuning and trans functions?

It would be nice to have the option of locking in on a specific gear without having to play with the accelerator pedal and play that game all trip while towing.

I agree that it would be nice to lock it in one gear. I wish I could hold it in 6th with the convertor locked and letter eat.

Although that does come with increased drive pressure. For the non-studded crowd, it is healthier for your truck all around to be able to increase the rpm to match the load rather than hold it down and crank the boost.

Well, I was right. Mine is a 5 speed automatic! That is why they are called a torque shift 5 speed automatic!
Any way, drove the truck with the trailer loaded using tow haul and not using it. I will be using the tow /haul mode in town for sure. Highway driving the tow haul will be off unless we are in traffic or at low speeds!

It's a 5 speed transmission with OD. While technically not a gear, I think they count OD as the 6th gear. It shifts 1,2,3,5,OD or if below 0F, 1,2,3,4,OD.

So, you have the same trans as the rest of us...you're still not special 😁
