We've only had ours a few months. I went into it really only knowing the horror stories and info I researched. I'll speak to at least the engine side of it. Truck overall is quite different. If you don't want to read, see last sentence.
It came down to:
2006 F350 Lariat SuperDuty CrewCab Dually Long bed
149,000 miles
Came with gooseneck ball (We assumed it was used for hauling at this point)
2hrs away
loaded leather w/sunroof
Asking $15,900
VS
2004 3500 Chevy Quadcab Dually Long bed
240,000 miles
Came with gooseneck ball and had bracket holes for 5th hitch as well as a 7pin jacked up for their gooseneck trailer (we assumed it was "abused" for hauling at this point)
30min away
loaded leather w/dvd
Asking $14,900
These were only 2 of 4 duallies for sale in the state
We made it to test drive both. Both drove really nice. Body/frame wise wasn't so good to the chevy though and looked like it had been more abused, bed was scratched beyond touchup (bedliner would have fixed). The fiberglass bed was cracked too. After finding the pressure gauge in the console and seeing it led to airbags in the rear, I was pretty turned off but still hesitant on the ford. The ford had the classic door and tailgate rust but overall body and underbody looked really nice. Had spray bed liner and dealer threw in nice pace edwards tonneau cover. Aside from some expected driver seat wear, interior was spotless. Looked like it was taken care of.
Ultimately we went with the ford and I was expecting the worst. I didn't have any scanners and just went off the test drive and overall cleanliness. ::knock on wood:: SO FAR it has been really good to us. Only thing I could find was a hesitation under load (on the way home of course) which seems to have been (mostly?) fixed with syn oil change, blue spring and fuel filters. I did buy a used gas version Edge CS (couldn't pass up for $100) to monitor things like boost, ECT, EOT, Trans temp, FICM V, Bat V, Boost, MPH and RPM.
Sorry to drag on. Above summarized- Yes, I would buy another one at this point. From what everyone has said. Staying ahead or on track with maintenance is key though.
