Hello everybody I bought a 2004 6.0 4wd off road pkg 6ft bed ext cab 6speed I'm somewhat new to diesels I am most familiar with 7.3 IDI fords, you guys will probably laugh but I am not used to driving a manul transmission diesel and was wondering if you could give me some tips PLEASE :tard: I can drive a stickshift car with ease but have never driven a truck, and for some reason its taking me a while to get used to it any tips for the nooby would be verry helpful, thanks:thumb:

the clutch is awesome on the truck, it has 114k miles I'm going to guess previous owner had the clutch replaced right before he traded it in probably oem idk about anything aftermarket but you are right first gear is slowwwwww also I shift at about 2k rpms and thanks for the welcome 95dieselsmoke

Haha don't sweat it 95dieselsmoke, and yes 2005F250, I found that I needed to get the rpms up and up then slowly let the clutch engage and off we go! I've gotten alot better took me a bit to get used the shifter being a bit odd and out of place, one question though I live in a stop and go traffic type town, but I am on the expressway/thruway alot but when I'm in town and I get on an incline and have to stop whats the best method to take off while on the hill so you do not roll into the car behind you? in cars that I have driven I would use the parking brake method sometimes but cant do that with a truck so what am I in for? lol, by the way thanks for all the feedback so far you guys

If I'm in a roll back situation uh I think I do one of two things. One the engine will be idling and I'll let the clutch out until I feel the clutch start to grab and hold the truck in place but not fully released and once I feel it grab I'll hit the throttle and let the clutch out as I give it more throttle. Second I'll be one foot on the clutch and one and the brake and throttle. Usaully heel on brake and toes on throttle and then just play the pedal game from there.

Just like he said, you can have foot on clutch and brake, let out on clutch till it engages then let off brake and roll on accelerator. These trucks have so much low end torque you really dont ever have to hit the skinny pedal to get initially going. OoooRahh 6spd, those automatic guys are just jealous!!!!! :thumb:

Good luck!!!

Just give it a little time, you should get used to it. Coming from years of gas sticks, the move to the 6.0 has been interesting. It has lots of grunt at idle, as long as you are not looking to get going quickly. Once the revs come up and the turbo spins up, you are off to the races. Then it is just a matter of the massivly long throws between shifts.

The first time you are starting up a steep hill with a trailer attached, you will LOVE the low gear.

i never have a problem on hills anymore and my low gear will pull my truck up a pretty steep hill with out hittin the go go pedal, but when i first learned to drive i would use the parking brake trick. you can do it the same its just instead of having a hand lever beside you, you have ot reach down real quick and pull the lever under the dash to release it.... let me explain better: push down the parking brake to where it'll hold the truck. let out on the clutch till you hit the friction point, start into the throttle a little bit and at the same time reach down and pull that lever real quick... hope this helps ya! oh and guys that're posting in here i'm assuming 98% of you have 6 spds. Do they make a short throw kit for our trucks?

Parking Brake? Sorry guys but that's for little girls just learning how to drive a stick. You let out on the clutch till it starts to engage and that will hold you on the hill. No need for the brake.

I haven't used the parking brake on a hill since i was 15, i was just trying to give him somethign that might keep him from drifting back and running his hitch through the front of a BMW...

Drive the truck:nod:
After a while all will be second nature. Drive the truck use yore senses to tell if the truck is happy or not if not try somthing else till everything is smooth. These trucks are much easier than any gas stick i have ever driven.

I just recently bought a powerstroke. it has the granny low with the five speed and i love it don't think i'll ever own another gas burner. now when i drive my chevy 1/2 ton first gear in it seems like third or o/d in my powerstroke.

thank you all so much for your help I'm fond of letting the clutch engage to hold you on the hilly parts of town but how bad is it really for the clutch? alot of people would say I'm wrong for doing it when I was driving cars but I never burned a clutch out, will it be different for a big beast truck, also I dont know if I should make a new thread for this but my truck does not have any guages I want to get a 3 gauge pillar, EGT,Boost and trans temp? definately want to moniter EGT, boost is just for fun not necessary most of the time I'm pulling a 12' enclosed trailer full of HVAC supplies, I don't drive like a speed demon but kind of want to moniter trans temp, how much do these clusters cost and where could I find the most cost effective one?

with a manual tranny you don't need to monitor trans temp bud...i'd say either get a 2 guage pod with egt and boost or 3 guage with egt boost and either fuel pressure, eot, or egt...

sometimes on a hill if im there alone and see a car comin up, ill roll back a little 2 let them kno i have a stick and they should not be up my a$$ on a hill !!!

Yup they def shouldnt be too close they are tards if they are but then again there are a bunch of tards in this nation. Or give them a lil puff of smoke to tell them to back off

You should not get into the habit of holding the truck with the clutch. It is ok for a second but do not sit there holding the truck buy the clutch. The Brakes are for that. Hold the brake let the cluch out when you feel it pull take foot off of brake and roll onto fuel whilr realesing the rest of the clutch.

You dont need 3 feet to drive a standard, nor try the dangerouse act of controlling 2 peddels with one foot.

Us road racers are used to heel and toeing it. Any performance driving class should teach you how to do that. But I agree. You don't want to hold your truck on a hill with the clutch rather than the brake. You just want to catch it with the clutch then get on the throttle to take off.

i have a 5 speed but if you are fast enough with your feet you dont need to puss out and use the parking brake or any of that other garbage i learned to drive on a 5 speed 4 cyl pickup and never used any of that junk just get fast feet lol and go with it

is that a chip mod?:dunno: my truck is bone stock I heard problems could develop if you chip and the 6.0 is stock also I see you have egr unplugged? what does that do is that like the delete or you just like suspended its activity by cutting powersource still new to alot of this stuff bear with me

I would agree with not trying the race car driver approach, although it's a must for me on the dirt circle...its not meant for the road:(...another old time trick is, just as your ready to pull away, stab the brake pedal and you will notice there will be a fraction of a delay in release that will also hold the truck to allow for your feet to get going.....I've driven stick since a wee lad and finally bought my fat bottom as auto...I drive 10, 13, 15 speeds all day long and enjoy a break every once in a while:crazy:
