Sunroof binding

So the last couple days have been nice out and have tried to open the sunroof. First couple times popped really loud but still opened. Yesterday I couldn't get it to open at all. Binds right when the window drops to move back. I can actually see the rear window flex down into he center like it's getting hung up on something. I can't see anything in there that would cause it. At first I thought maybe the seal was just sticking because it hasn't been used very much since I bought and not sure how much the previous owner used it. Haven't had any issues with leaking so far (thank goodness). Just rolled 38k so no warranty.

Hey,

I have a 2017 and the sunroof had similar issues. It stuck and wouldn’t open and when it did I couldn’t get it to close but it eventually did. I took it in to the dealer and they said something (I’m sorry I can’t remember what it was exactly) was broken on the sunroof tracks and needed to be replaced. It took about half a day for them to fix. Sorry I can’t be more helpful but It’s interesting that we had similar issues with the sunroof.

Probably the tracks. Everything aside from the cables is plastic. Have seen many fail.
The dealer may still slide it in under warranty if it's close. Depends where you go.

Thanks. I will check with the local dealers and see if anyone would be able to help me out. If not though, how would I go about fixing it? Is it just a simple adjustment somewhere or do I have replace parts? How much are said parts if they are necessary?

Well doesnt look like Im going to get any help from Ford or the dealer on this. They pretty much said its out of warranty and you're on your own. Really bummed because this is my first vehicle with a sunroof and I enjoy the hell out of them. 2k miles outside of warranty and it goes to crap. Even tried to negotiate them at least covering half and all I got was "Im bound by these terms and conditions that Ford has set forth" from the lady I talked to. Dealer said its possible that its just a clip, but he said its tracks most of the time. They wouldnt look at it unless I paid the $150 diagnostic fee. I didnt really want to do that until I had a chance to work with Ford. How much do the parts normally run and is it something that can be done with a friend on a nice saturday?

I did my own on my 2010 F150. There are aftermarket update kits for the flimsy OEM internals. I don’t know that I’d tackle a pano roof though. Mine in the 2015 F150 is still under warranty and been in 3 times to get fixed for binding, failure to open and failure to shut

Thanks all. Yeah I thought $2k seemed a bit much. I read through the link that was posted and saw someone managed to fix theirs with parts from sunroofdoctor.com. Watched a bunch of videos and it actually seems pretty easy to do. I will try to look at mine tonight after work and see if the track is cracked now that I know where to look. I was under the assumption that the whole rail assembly had to be replaced and that's why the dealer was charging so much.

Sunroofdoctor sells diy kit including very good video on repair instruction . All for under $200. 4 hour driveway repair taking your time. Ask me how I know ?

You just drop headliner down to rest on the reclined seats. Ford only sells complete track assy, not the plastic pieces that actually break hence $2k.

Well I got home from work and pulled the little accordion cover thing and sure enough I saw it was cracked. Ordered new tracks from the sunroof doctor. Hopefully they will be in before this weekend so I can fix my sunroof.

This is disturbing to me that a 2 y/o truck has the tracks on the sunroof cracking. Good to know that you can buy the tracks easily enough and I watched the install video which doesn't seem so terrible. But still....that's pretty crappy that they are plastic and break that easily.

Yeah, there have been literally 10s of 1000s of these trucks across 10 years that have those cheap plastic guide failures. Ford has done ZERO to remedy this- just charging people $3k to fix their faulty design. There was talk of a class action lawsuit but not much materialized. To think a simple upgrade to a more durable casting would have eliminated the obvious issues years ago but they are content to keep it as a secondary revenue stream instead. Sad....

Agree that it is sad. This is my first ford and I can not believe how many issues are known to ford and yet they do nothing to correct them the following year. Hearing all these stories makes me can’t wait until I mile this truck out in about 4yrs so I can go back to Ram. I really do like the 18 Limited SRW F-350 I have but from the first week, I thought the fit and finish wasn’t very good. Lots of cheap feeling parts.

I poked around the manual yesterday (online version) and what I also find interesting is no mention of moonroof maintenance. I would have thought something would be mentioned to keep the seals good, tracks clean/lubed, etc. On a old Mustang I had, the manual at least mentioned using a silicone spray on the seals to keep them pliable, etc.

When I called Ford I mentioned that I shouldn't have these problems on a 2 yr old truck. She just gave me the same line over and over. It's over the mileage so I'm screwed and they won't do anything. Mileage shouldn't correlate to the sunroof. I'm wondering how hard it would be to work on my CAD skills a little and come up with something that can be machined or cast.

I posted a thread asking about sunroof issues before I ordered my 19 last year, only got good feedback. Had this been up I would have passed. My 19 has one. I figured If it breaks or leaks I’ll just clear wrap the roof and that will seal it over. Then just be a fancy window but not open

Well I got the tracks in the mail today and took me about an hour to swap them out. Sunroof works awesome. $144 including shipping for the parts, couple beers, and some elbow grease and it saved me $2200.

The parts I received looked identical to the factory parts. So I assuming that they are the same quality. This leads me to the next subject...

I called Ford today and tried to address this issue with them. So essentially my truck is fixed so I have no reason to hound them for warranty repairs anymore (or to be mad for that matter. I just glad my truck is fixed and I can enjoy the beautiful spring air). My main goal was to try to get a hold of someone who can actually look into the issue and understand that it doesn't need the whole sunroof assembly replaced but just the little tracks. $140ish in parts and an hour of labor for a tech should be roughly a $300 repair. The lady I talked to on the customer care line was very nice, but pretty much said they have no contact with anybody outside of their call center. So the information I tell her goes into a feedback file and relayed to who knows where. I would really like to speak to someone who can actually look into the issue and Im willing to help where ever I can. Im not an angry customer and would like to see this benefit both parties. So that being said, does anybody have a contact number to someone I can talk to that I can convey properly what Im trying to do here. I would understand if you cant post it publicly, so a PM would be just as good.

I suppose I can pop these videos in here. These were the videos I watched to fix my sunroof. He did the repair on an F-150, but everything is the same. These were a huge help and really simplifies everything.

Window glass removal

Track Replacement

Lubrication

Calibration procedure

My family and friends made fun of me a little bit when I was buying my latest truck because I was adamant that I didn't want a sunroof. I don't use them, and didn't want to deal with problems down the line. Every sunroof eventually fails, but I'm surprised it happened so soon with yours. It seems like that shouldn't happen on a truck that costs this much.

At least it didn't leak at an inopportune time. So you've got that going for you! I'm glad you got it fixed easily and cheaply.

If you don't use it then I can understand not wanting the hassle of it. But this is the first vehicle I've owned with a sunroof and love it. It's open any chance I can get. My mom always said I was the weird child because I'm always running with the windows down [emoji23].

Over my 30+ years of owning and driving vehicles, I have never had a power roof fail on me. No leaks, no broken tracks, nothing. I do clean and lube the tracks each quarter and use silicon on the seals, but this plastic track thing on these trucks has me wondering if that good track record, no pun intended, will run out with my F250.

Are the tracks you ordered plastic like the OEM ones or made of a better material? Thanks for taking the time to post the videos. I'll be saving this info just in case I do have an issue.
