Suggestions to repair a blank radio display

My friend has a 2012 F250 and the radio display is blank. It seems to be a common problem, and there are company's around that can fix the 'Ford blank radio problem'. It seems like it would simply need to be resolder inside somewhere.

Does anyone have knowledge on how easy it is? And what needs to be done? I couldn't find too much information about repairing them.

Thanks,

BTW, I have access to a commercial grade solder iron, flux, tools and other stuff. Depends how complicated it gets, I could get my coworker to do the soldering for me. He solders chips onto circuit boards quite often.

Hi got the same problems with two 6.7 trucks. F250 2011 and f350 2011. if you have a soldering iron that's a pretty easy job. You remove the radio then there is 4 torx bolts (I think it's t10). You remove them and you remove the cover of the radio. Then you see all the components. If you check VERY WELL (hard to see, better with a magnifying glass), there is four resistances side to side and the metal is crack. just re do the solder and all will be ok. For mines, both trucks had 2 cracks in the solders.

Sorry for my bad english i speak french. Don't hesitate if questions.

Thanks for the input. You know, we had a '99 Powerstroke with the same display. You'd think Ford could've come up with a little more reliable design.

Ok, I will try to look at that. I have a hunch it's simply a bad connection or solder joint somewhere, but I didn't know what to start looking. I'll pull the cover off and see what I can find.
If you pull yours out and tear it down, would you mind taking a couple pics? Mine's not stopped completely just yet, so I hadn't planned on taking it out.

I will see what I can do. It might be a couple days until I have time to tear it down.

Thanks man. If you get around to it, just snap a pic of what needs to be resoldered. I'm not too familiar with electronic internals. If I have a pic pointing it out it would be a major help.

I finally had time to tear down the radio. The solder on all the joints (including the resistors) looked good. However, there was a burn spot on the LCD screen (see picture) I can't seem to find any parts or replacement for the LCD or the circuit board, so I may just have to let it sit for now. 4dtech.com seems to only have parts/replacements for the navigation option.

Any have a busted radio like this that I can have for parts? (one that the LCD works?)

I considered doing that. I already tried hunting by using circuit board numbers, to no avail. I currently emailing a company that claims they can fix it. I sent them the pictures, to see what they say.

Just an update, I eventually sent the whole head unit away to get repaired. After looking it over very good, I couldn't find any problem with it. There appeared to be burn marks on the screen, but after communicating with a radio repair technician, he seemed to think that mark was ok. (I assume he wasn't just trying to get me to send it to him for repair..?)
Anyway, I sent the radio away for repair, and the day he received it, he sent me a paypal invoice of $55. I paid it and the very next day he shipped it back to me. It looks to be the same one that we sent, although I really can't verify it in any way. I installed it, and it works great! That was about two weeks ago and it's still working.
I'm bummed I couldn't fix it myself, but $55 is still cheap that I can't complain.

Great posts and thanks for the info!!

Just helped my brother-in-law with the same thing on his 2015 F250. Radio was doing the same thing and not working all the time and sometimes when he would hit it he could get it to work for a little while. He took it apart and brought it over to me and everything looked good with the solder points and it had the same black spot in the same area of the LCD. I went ahead and hit every resistor with solder and the four in a row that the video shows being soldered, when I got to the second one and hit the first side, the whole resistor moved. Leads me to believe that even though it looked good, the one solder side was cracked and when I melted the good side it moved. Maybe the other ones, I soldered the broken side first because no other one moved.

Low and behold, he reinstalled it and radio worked perfectly.

So my suggestion is if you are having this problem, just go ahead and hit at least those 4 resistors to re-solder them. They may not look like the solder joints are bad, but they are so small, they might be. You are not out anything but a little time to teat apart the radio, solder and put it back together if it doesn't work. I am sure that is all the guy did for $55.00.

I know this is an old post but hopefully it helps others to see success stories!
