Hey guys my 03 has a random long crank weather cold or hot and a what hears like a slight miss at idle. It just started yesterday. Two days ago i put some 2 cycle oil in the tank (seems like a bad idea now) since then i have the random long crank. I am not sure but i believe my ICP is leaking because of a small spot of oil about 4 inches around on the ground at the back middle of where the engine is. Yesterday I filled up the tank and put some white bottle diesel kleen in. drove fine, parked it at 3 and had to go out so at 6 started it up and it was fine. parked it for about 15 minutes and it long cranked for 10-15 seconds and fire up, got home and shut it off. This morning plugged it in because its 19* out for two hours and put SCT on to see temps ECT was 68* and EOT was 54* so i went to start it and it cranked for 8-10 seconds before starting, shut off and went to start right away again and started in 2 seconds but has a miss. I have no codes except KAM code which i have had for about 4 weeks now (can't figure that one out) The other thing i can think of is the day i put the 2 cycle in i had the hood up and the hood pistons dont work so by mistake the hood closed really hard. Where should i start. BTW i cant read IPR with the SCt only ICP in desired and counts whatever that means. I can read engine load and load in park is 16% and load in reverse is 22%. Could thin oil or not enough oil do this? I am going outside now to check oil. Thanks

Ok oil if full and doesn't smell like diesel. Temps before starting 88* ECT, 84* EOT, this time i waited until volts went from 11.9 to 12.3 and it was about 50 seconds and it fired right up no long crank. So now i will warm it up and see how it starts. I can still hear a slight miss as it runs outside right now. Probably that damn 2 cycle! Never again!!!!!

Let it warm up to 188* ECT and 190* EOT. Seems miss has gone. Shut the truck off waited about 20 seconds and it started right up no long crank. So now i am going to wait 15 minutes and see what happens. I don't think i have a HP oil leak. I am thinking ICP or that stupid 2 cycle oil in the tank.

So waited 15 minutes and started it and it took about 5 seconds to start. Shut it off and restarted it and only took about 2 second to fire. Is it normal to have varying crank times? Batteries are new but only showed 12.8 after GP's went off, with GP on 11.9. I will put the truck on the battery minder now.

too busy muddin or wrenchin!

I actually don't see that you have an issue. Varying crank times are pretty common due to lots of factors that change with time since shut down. As for the 10 second or longer crank times, that MIGHT be an issue just starting to show up in the fuel delivery system or with the injector system...or not...

Most often, varying cranking times are a leak in either the high pressure oil system or an intermittent issue with ICP/IPR. It shouldn't have varying cranking times, but there's so many things that it could be that most people don't bother fixing that kind of issue. It takes a lot of time, attention, troubleshooting skill, and expensive diagnostic tools. Then, once you think you have it figured out, the parts often cost a lot of money.

For an 03, my guess (and its purely a guess) is that you may have an ICP issue where your pigtail is getting saturated in oil causing an intermittent long crank. You can check your pigtail but it's fairly involved and like I said, it's purely a guess.

Check this video. At about 2:30, he shows you where the ICP is located on the 03.

Well i changed the oil two days ago, problem is when i drained it about 21-22 quarts of oil came out!!!!! Left plug out for a while and put new delo 5w-40 synthetic and some archoil in. I have about 20 miles on it since and it starts great. I think last month a injector was stuck wide open because one morning i started it and it ran like crap was real loud and it smoked so much you could not see my house or the neighbors house. I did get a cylinder 5 contribution code then but is now gone. I bet all the extra oil and what smells like diesel was making it hard to crank. I will now keep a eye on the oil level to make sure is not rising from fuel in the oil. Hey good news now is it starts up in 2 seconds now not plugged in. If the injector was stuck open would that much fuel get in the oil?
