Question about operating a zf5 transmission 7.3

I recently purchased a 96 7.3l with a zf5 transmission. Now the only vehicles that I am used to driving standard on are old chevy's with the bulldog (granny) gear. Is there any one who definitively knows if 1st gear on our zf5s is a bulldog gear? I just don't want to operate the vehicle improperly for a long time and cause myself grief. I appreciate all help. Thanks.

I drove our 94 dually with the Powerstroke and 4.10 rear just like a regular 5-speed. The ZF's are fairly stout transmissions. 1st gear is pretty low and there's really no problem starting in 2nd gear provided you're not towing something. Cheers!

I would say ZF5/6 is more like old lady 1st gear. Oldschool tranny's had true granny gears

axle gearing would decide whether to start out in 1st or 2nd... it's not really a true "granny gear", but whether you have 3.55 or 4.10 gears could make the difference IMO

on my 99 with 3.73 gears and larger tires (so lower overall gearing), I use 1st gear when starting regardless
