Hello everyone,

I asked before for opinions on Wix brand filters. Thanks for the input.
What are some opinions about the Purolator Boss oil filter?
Reading their website the Boss oil filter seems pretty good. I've also read that Purolator makes Ford's oil filters. Is that still true? Thanks in advance for your input and opinions.

I use them in my gas vehicles all the time with no concerns. I even have 1 ready and waiting for the next change on the 6.7.

For the 6.7 I'm not as particular as I was with my 6.0 where it was OEM only. For the 6.7, I stick with reputable names (e.g. Mobil 1, Motorcraft, Puralator Boss, etc) but not as worried about the filter not fitting because it's a canister type. On the 6.0, a poor fitting filter can spell disaster hence why I was OEM only.

An update. Bought 13 quarts of Shell Rotella T6 and a Purolator Boss oil filter. Went to a shop to change the oill yesterday. This morning noticed a small puddle of oil on the ground and a drip from the filter. Stopped by the shop on the way home from work so they could check the filter. Turns out that the filter had a very small crack around the rim where the filter screws on. What bad luck. The shop replaced the Purolator Boss with a Royal Purple oil filter.

:nerd: Considering I was a DOD Quality Assurance Specialist, I'll never say nothing will never fail.

>:) Knowing how contracts are written with concerns for QA, material specs, dimensions, test parameters, etc etc I can say OEM specs for Ford will be MUCH different over Brand X. Then consider that the filters for these trucks are not $85 ea, they are sold in WalMart for maybe $1-2 over the aftermarket brands.

Buy what you want. If you feel you are getting something better than OEM go for it. In the end you will never know the true specs of what you are buying unless you work in the factory or know someone who is on the factory floor.

Really the OEM filters come off the same line as whoever is making them - and the co-op filter lines have virtually every brand under the sun...brand F is making certain brand W filters, and brand W makes all of brand F's Made-in-USA filters, while brand P makes brand W's compact & cartridge filters, and brand F is making all of brand P's Mexican filters...all while virtually every one of them makes the private labels for your various auto parts houses, mass-retailers, niche markets, etc. The colors, logos, part numbers, and packages are easily changed as the production day churns on...

Now, yes, I agree OEM can be a better choice (bypass valve specs/locations, efficiencies, particulate size, filter size, quality control, specific application designs). And the filter manufacturers will have a lot to gain by winning (and retaining) the OEM filter contracts...end results can be better for you and your rig.

Ironically Purolator makes Ford OEM oil filters.

Caveat: They make them to Ford specifications and there is not a Purolator made that is the same as the Ford OEM filter.

Differences:
1. Puro P1 media
2. PureONE's silicone ADBV
3. By Pass Valve is the Ford spec design, the BPV is at the bottom instead of the top like a normal Purolator filter
