Powermax Stage 1 Turbo for F250 6.0

Recently I had a long start when cold issue. Took it in and discovered an STC fitting issue. I have a 2005 F250 6.0 diesel. It's been studded, EGR delete, blue spring upgrade, coolant filter, updated dummy plugs and stand pipes, MBRP turbo back 4" exhaust with the MBRP muffler. I run a tow tune and this truck mostly just tows the RV, roughly 14k pounds. I asked the mechanic to take the turbo apart to check it as I have had occasional issues that made me think it was sticking. Mechanic says it was pitted and rusty and should be replaced. I've always hated the little bit of turbo lag I get, especially since I tow. I'm considering replacing the turbo with a Powermax stage 1. I'm told by this particular, very popular vendor of aftermarket diesel performance parts, that the Powermax already comes with the Wicked wheel in it. I don't really want a loud whistle (since I am in RV parks frequently) but would love an increased performance of an upgraded turbo, especially if it helps towing performance and may cut down on turbo lag. So, I'm asking for opinions on the performance of this Powermax turbo and the whistle. Is it worth the almost double price for the performance? And does it have a really loud whistle? Appreciate your input.

I have no first hand experience with KC, but I hear nothing but good things from his product or customer service. My last truck I had the stage 1 BD Screamer and it....screamed. Definetly was not a fan, and for having a billet wheel i was never impressed with spool up. Just call Charlie and get a turbo from him.

So, ..."pitted and rusty and should be replaced " is the criteria to replace a turbo
need to define pitted and rusty 'cause every turbo I have had off has pits and rust - except a new turbo

Guess I sould use "pitted and rusty and should be replaced " as a sales tool -- would make a lot more in parts markup

KC stage 1 with the 13 blade turbine. No louder than what you have now, but moves more air!

I haven't seen the unison ring. I would only notice a different tone to the engine and high EGT's with low boost AFTER getting on it hard while passing (and towing only). I would let off the accelerator a couple of times and it would go back to normal EGT's and boost, and the tone would be normal. Not a big problem...........yet. That's why I was considering replacing it.

That turbo is fine, just needs cleaned up some
the surface where the unison ring sits has to allow the ring to turn freely
also important that the slot on the unison ring where the control pin fits is not worn
the control pin needs to rotate freely in the housing

All these things can be cleaned up, and the unison ring replaced if the slot is worn
or just drop the dime on the new KC turbo
I would have no problems running what you show in those pics
that little bit of pitting is normal -- some cast iron does this worse that others -- just a roll of the dice

You asked for opinions
you get opinion and advice
I have had hands on of a lot worse housing than yours

The "fit" of the unison ring on that housing would be the determining factor in replacing
if the ring is sloppy on the housing, then the easy fix is replacement

What they said. Need to see the unison ring.

If you decide to go with a new charger, the KC stage 1 is the most popular choice for your truck.

Look at the unison ring, and physically turn it on the turbo. I think a good wire brush and Scotch-Brite would clean that rust up really well. As long as the unison ring can move and isn't worn, I think you are good to run the turbo. The pitting that really needs attention is where the vanes actually sit. It looks like the vanes would have a hard time moving over that rust buildup, and you could get an overboost scenario.

I have another option for you. I have an exhaust housing from my '05 that I'd let go for cheap if you want to rebuild it. Absolutely nothing wrong with it - no rust or pitting...just needs the carbon knocked off of it.

Let me know. You pay for the ride as well.

Added more after you quoted me. I do actually have the CHRA as well, but I had a leaky turbine seal, so you, would need to transfer your old turbine and probably a rebuild kit with new bearings & seal if you want that as well.
