No oil pressure

Went to start truck. It ran for a few seconds and died. Checked HPOP & it was empty. Filled HPOP & it started, ran about 20 seconds and died. Oil pressure gauge showed NO oil pressure during cranking and engine running. It has new IPR on left side head. Unusual HPOP. Temp sensor on bottom. Oil pressure switch up top. Any ideas ? The 97 HPOP pictures is entirely different from my 95 ?

Anyone recommend a diesel guy in Central Minnesota. Dealers around here are untrustworthy... I've been chasing problems with this truck for two years. New valve cover gaskets and harnesses. Glow plugs and relay. New ECM. IPR. Fuel filter.

Wait to start light never stays on for more than a few seconds, even when cold... No oil pressure on gauge worries me...

The HPOP reservoir looks normal to me. The differences between late and early models of OBS trucks' in this area would be that the switch and inspection plug are straight threaded o-ringed on the later and NPT on the early (gasketing would different too, but not germane here). The injection control pressure sensor is the one in the drivers side head while the Injection Pressure Regulator (IPR) valve is on the back of the HPOP. If the reservoir is not filling, you can check for voltage at the IPR wiring with the key on. You may need to check the lube oil pressure to see what its doing (there is a port down by the oil filter. You can also check the OP gauge by grounding the switch wire (it should read about mid-scale. Cheers!

You do not have base oil pressure, that is how the HPOP reservoir is filled. Could be something in the low pressure regulator or the pump took a dump.

There is oil in the engine?? seems silly, but have to ask ...be surprised at how many dont check

There is a picture of the 7.3 oil system floating around here somewhere, ..will post if I can find it.

Anyone had experience with the oil pickup tube loosening? If there's oil in the truck, and the low pressure pump is actually good, could be that the gasket is shot, or the tube has something wrong. You can test this by jacking the back end of the truck up sky high to get the oil to the front of the engine where the pickup tube meets the front cover. If you get oil to the HPOP reservoir and it runs, then you've likely found your issue... Thing that's rough is that this basically means the engine has to be pulled or picked up in the engine bay so that you can drop the pan far enough to access the gasket.

There was a TSB for damaged/cracked oil pickup tubes and the procedure to check it. I've attached it for you. Cheers!

Hmmm, it works for me. You can also try this link (if this site leaves it alone): TSB 95-10-07. Cheers!

If you need to pull the pan off, you can raise the front of the cab 4 inches, loosen the motor mounts and raise the engine 5 inches and the oil pan will slide right off. There is a youtube vid that shows how this works.

Many Thanks to you guys ! My 95 was very reliable after a few sensor changes, glow plugs, gpr with nearly 400k. This 97 has been a pita... 🙂 Truly appreciate all the help. Winter has arrived early here in Minnesota and the truck will not fit in the garage. I'm going to have some cold fingers !

Best of luck... I'm in the same boat, by truck is 3' longer than my garage is deep. One trick I learned for cold weather work was to plug the truck in so that the block wasn't frigid when working on it. Gives you a good excuse to hug your truck too.
