New to me 2018 6.7L, high mileage, where should I start?

Hello there...

This is my first post on this forum. I am purchasing a 2018 F-250 6.7L 4x4 Platinum with 195k miles for an absolute steal! This was a company owned vehicle and the standard maintenance was completed regularly. I would like to do whatever modifications are going to be beneficial for longevity of the vehicle. I am going to delete the vehicle and if permitted, would like input on that process. Right now I am planning to simply go the unplug route, tune (recommendations welcome), and remove the DEF system & CAT from the exhaust. On top of that, I am considering these modifications as well: CP4 Disaster prevention kit, Billet Drain Valve, CCV Reroute, Internal Catch Can, Cold Side intercooler Pipe, & High Flow Low Temp Thermostat.

My overall goal is longevity and hopefully a couple of more MPG's over stock 🤞.

Please let me know your thoughts!

Thank you!!!

Some argue that tuning won’t help the longevity but I tend to lean the opposite way. Not necessarily in disagreement because some people tune these trucks and try to drive them like sports cars which will cause premature failures. But, if you delete and tune the truck (illegal by the way) and not drive the truck like you stole it… it can certainly be beneficial for both longevity and fuel mileage.

I’ve owned my truck for 13 years now… bought it brand new in 2010. It’s got almost 200K on it and so far my only reoccurring issues are the expendable bearings and bushings in the front steering and suspension and the coolant crossover gasket that’s blown twice now. It’s been deleted for more than half the miles I’ve put on it and it’s on the stock turbo, stock trans, etc.

There’s a military motto that goes “take care of your equipment and your equipment will take care of you” which is a piece of advice I’ve always heeded. So far it’s never let me down.

I want to acknowledge the excitement of a new diesel owner. Thanks for joining our forum.

Thats said, a red flag is anyone who leads off with longevity and MPG gains. This tells me you only read headlines and havent taken time to really dig in yet.

So lets start with...

1. check the laws in GA about emissions testing before you do anything
2. deleting/tuning is illegal in the US so educate yourself BEFORE you make a purchase
3. No matter how much money you throw at this its lived 200k being abused, its not a wise investment.

If you got a great deal, I would recommend you clean it up, fix any problems it has, and trade/flip it for a lower mileage truck.

Thanks for your input. I am still researching and looking for advice (that's why I'm here). You are off base a bit though, as I already knew everything that you stated.
1. We are a non-emissions county so that doesn't apply.
2. I have read up and understand the legality issues around deleting. I was not aware that tuning was illegal aside from making changes to the emissions systems?
3. I am not sure how you can say that this truck has been abused... are you saying that there is no way around "abuse" with 200k? If not, I do not understand where you are coming up with that assumption. Our company keeps regular maintenance on all of the trucks. The driver also takes great care of the vehicles that he is issued.

As far as the deal goes, I am trading a 2011 F250 6.2L XLT with 270k miles + $15k. Great deal to me!

It’s against federal law to delete despite state and local ordinances/laws. That’s what he is getting at there. Tuning is not illegal so long as the emissions equipment is not tampered with.

As far as the “abused” comment… most people try to stay away from fleet owned vehicles because the drivers rarely drive them as if they care. So a 50,000 mile fleet vehicle is more than likely worn as if it’s got 200,000 miles on it.

Sounds like you are in a good spot.

I'll address my "abused" comment.

This was a company owned vehicle and the standard maintenance was completed regularly
Anyone who knows how fleet maintenance works, especially in the construction industry, will understand my comment.

Lets see some pictures of these trucks.
The people love pics!

Thanks for the clarification! I appreciate your replies. This truck was one of our Projct Manager's so its a bit different than the typical field hand running the crap out of it. I'll get more pics tomorrow!

I bought a 2019 XLT with 6.7. 81,200 miles on it. The Carfax showed good records of oil and filter changes but nothing else. So I've actually enjoyed going through the truck one at a time and servicing everything. So far I've:

  • Greased U-joints on front axle joints
  • Changed cabin air filter (it was disgusting)
  • Changed both fuel filters (frame mounted housing was disgusting inside)
  • Changed rear axle fluid
  • Changed front axle fluid
  • Replaced FM antenna with factory
  • Adjusted all tire pressures to normal levels

I've got Mercon LV and a trans filter on order. I'm going to change the t-case fluid and transmission fluid and install a new filter. Going to replace the '19 trans pan with a '17 trans pan so that I will have a drain plug for the future.

After this it should be a great truck hopefully for many many years.
