Long crank - louder running - where to start

Hey team,

I haven’t posted in forever cuz the truck has just plain been working great.
Famous last words.

Specs: bone stock 2011 F350 SRW Lariat. 183k miles. I’m not OG owner but dont think there’s any evidence of a tune or any other mods.

Symptoms: as of a few days ago, the truck just sounds louder. More like a 6BT and not a PS 6.7. I noticed it sounds more Clacky… sorry but that’s about how I can describe it. Also a few times recently, it took longer to start. Cranks longer before firing up, this truck has always kicked right on. Maybe 1 to 2 seconds max crank time since I got it 20k miles ago. It really has been a reliable truck. Only issue I had was gelled fuel (my fault) back in Nebraska with 10 degree weather and no winterizer. New fuel filter fixed that lickity split.
Once started it drives totally fine. No warning lights, shifts normal just sounds louder. I know that’s not helpful.
I will say when i shut the engine off, and the turbo spins down, it sounds like a low bearing grind as it slows. There is a oil leak coming from somewhere up high. Not sure where yet.
She burns/eats maybe 1/2 quart oil everything few months. Black stone labs gave my oil a really good grade on my last oil change 5k miles ago. No heavy metal particles etc…

So my plan is to fire up Forscan and look for codes. Check running conditions. Etc. then look for anything obvious. Try to find the source of the oil leak. Listen for a more specific point of any leaks or maybe bottom end issues (My biggest fear.)

So I‘m a semi competent DIY mechanic but obviously these trucks are seriously complex.

What would you all suggest I look for? What procedures would you suggest I do?
If i can’t find the obvious loose something, obvious blown turbo what not, I’ll have it towed to a mechanic for diagnostics. It runs fine but how many times have we all read “it ran fine until it didn’t” and that person blew their motor….

Im hoping I’m being melodramatic here but better safe than sorry. I don’t need the truck everyday so I can afford to be cautious.

Your help is always appreciated.

EDIT I just filled up the tank and have not used my summer mix with Cetane. I forgot to add it on this last tank. I just put some in and will see if anything changes after I run it for a bit.

So, I have 2011 F350 with 183k. Is there something I should do to make sure my software etc is up to date? Im having a weird long crank issue, see my recent post, but it seems to be running fine now and no codes are being thrown...
Just curious. I haven't had it at a dealer for 2 years cuz I do all my own maintenance.

GregWork, I couldn't agree more. I will avoid the Stealer like the plague. There are some really good Diesel mechanics in my area. Southern Virginia Coast. AT this point though, it runs great. NO stutters or anything. Forscan looked at temps, pressures, etc and everything seems to be looking good. Truck is not throwing any codes, just has a weird extended crank sometimes.

I was reading other posts about how the key may be extended crank, but remote doesn't because of some parameter in the ECM.... I have been playing with starting it using both to determine if there is correlation.

One new symptom yesterday. Started with key. Fired right up then immediately stalled. Restarted with key and it stayed running.... weird.
Again, because it has good oil pressure, coolant levels and seems to run fine, I am considering this an intriguing issue and will continue to drive the truck. At this point, I am not too worried about doing any damage. I still need to investigate the turbo but that will require a lot of removal of parts to see if its leaking from up top, so that later.

Thanks all!

Reddog7.3, thanks for the tip. I will look into that.

One observation is it always starts cleanly when I use remote start (I was researching other threads of similar issues.) It only exhibits this behavior when starting with the key and not all the time. It appears to be random for now. Hot/Cold, not always the same.

One instance it started then immediately stalled. Restarted right away with the key.

Im keeping a database now so I can narrow it down. I will swap fuel filters early. Im due for an oil change but not filters. It can't hurt to replace both. Going to send off the oil to Blackstone to see if there is any evidence of scary stuff in my oil.

Still not throwing any codes either.

So it still sounds a little kid when running but hasnt stutter started for a few days.
im gonna just keep watching it.

Stutter started randomly over the last few days. Only at start up. Remote start or key doesnt seem to matter now. Again, it will run fine once it starts, but sometimes it won’t start. Will stutter, stall, them start right up on the 2nd try… always runs good once it gets going. Does seem to happen more when at operating temp.
I’m gonna swap fuel filters early and see if that makes a difference.

is there a big service I should be doing/have done already on the fuel system? I’m at 184k miles.

thanks!

@reddog7.3 , this is invaluable advice. I will listen in closely next time I start it up for the fuel pump. I need to learn more about my fuel system. It sounds like there are at least 2 pumps.
What is the best way to test pumps? I'll dig into Forscan to see if there is a Fuel Pressure in PSI but if not, is there a "shadetree" approach?

Thanks for everyones help!

So I listen for the Lift Pump every time I start it and so far I hear it whine away (like normal sound) and it hasn't had a long start since I started listening. I will continue to monitor but that is a great help.

Im betting the next time it long starts, I will hear a whiny or no lift pump noise.

Going to start a new post about this.

Thinking about my aging fuel system, might be a good investment.

Then I should TOTALLY buy one of those Bypass Fuel Disaster kits then?

Update

So I’ve been through 2 tanks of fuel since the last occurrence and no Long cranks or loud running. I’m gonna go ahead and say it, I think I had a round of bad fuel. I’ve been using my summer additive and good fuel from reputable stations and i think thats it.
I’ll update if it happens again but for now, I’m going with bad/dirty fuel.
I have a new fuel filter set coming as its due for oil and filter changes anyway so we’ll see what the filters look like when I pull them.

Thanks everyone for their suggestion.
