Leak around oil filter -Got a Q

Changed my oil. First time I’ve had slow leak around a new filter at the top gasket. I confirmed the old gasket came off w the old filter. I applied oil to the new gasket face but maybe there’s a tiny bit of grime/dirt/etc on the face of the engine where it attaches?

im considering taking the filter off, cleaning the face of both and screwing it back on. Can I do that and not lose a ton of oil? How much do you think will spill out as long as I keep the filter up so keep oil IN the filter still?

thx!

Maybe 3/4 quart sits on top of it. A little less maybe. Have you changed the filter without issue before this? These filters seem to like it tight. Ive had them leak a little before. Then I turn the filter like a man and it seals right up. Lol.
Also, you sure it is coming from the filter gasket? I had a leak under warranty that was an O ring where the filter mount bolts to the engine. It looks like the filter but is actually up a little higher when you get a good look. I don't know what that part is called. It has a sensor screwed into it just above the filter itself.

Changed it many times. Always motorcraft filter and no issues. Hell it may be too tight? I wiped it up clean so the filter was beautiful and drove it 2 miles and it’s dripping down the side. I noticed a few drops on my driveway and I normally never ever drop.

I’m half inclined to just go swing by the dealer and get a new filter , fill it full of oil, remove the other, wipe the surface clean and install a new one. May be a waste of money but my time is money and it’s time to keep having to clean my driveway too :)

I did read a few posts about the rare instance of a bad gasket. Rare yes.

I can say these filters LOVE to be put on tight. When you think it's tight get a strap wrench for another 1/2 turn or more. Even with my gorilla grip hands I still need a strap wrench to get it where there's no sign of oil.

Another thing to check is the adapter insert the oil filter threads onto. It could have come loose a thread or two which would not allow the filter seal to make full contact with the face of the housing. I want to say I remember my tech said one time he had my adapter back out when changing the oil. I want to say it's an allen key that fits in the middle to help with getting the adapter tighten correctly.

Adapter!! D@mn, why couldnt I remember that stupid word last night. Lol. If memory serves, there are O rings that seal the adapter to the block. That was where mine was leaking. It was top side and ran down onto the filter so it looked like a filter leak.
Carry on......I going to buy some Prevagen.

UPDATE: I backed the filter off 1/2-3/4 of a turn and cleaned any oil residue on the sides. I drove 15 miles and no more oil.
BACK STORY: When I was changing the oil filter I got oil all over my hands and I didn't clean them well before installing the new filter, so it was slippery. I guess I lost perspective on how much strength to use to tighten it down, where it stops free spinning and another 1/2-3/4 more, because I had tightened it all the way to the end. I did go out this morning and buy a new motorcraft filter, so IF the issue persists and IF I end up removing it to check the gasket/o-ring, I have this handy and can always just swap it out and do it properly this time.

Thanks all.
