Just curious what oil everyone uses in their 7.3 and after how many miles do you change your oil?

i change mine every 3-4k. some oil companies recommend every 3k miles or 3 months but i do mine every 3k. some synthetic oils say you can go 6k or even more than that. my truck starts to run rough when it needs an oil change.

They make Synthetic oils for diesels? I didn't see any today when i was in the auto parts store.
My truck was a quart low, so i got some Delo400 15-40

I use Shell Rotella T 15w40, change it every 3k. I know I could probabaly go longer, but with 203k miles and my heavy-footed driving style, it's best to keep fresh oil in it IMO

i use delo400 15w/40 and nothing else. thats just what i use. and yes they make synthetic diesel oils. i used to work for a chevy dealer (realized how much the duramax sucked so i bought a powerstroke) and we did sell a mobil 1 synthetic 5w/40. and mobil 1 told us that you could go up to 12k on this oil. not me. i got every 3k. and what some people dont know is that the molecules in the oil will break down over time and not lubricate as well as it is supposed to. thats why the oil companies recommend 3k or 3 months.

I use Mobil 1 is all my race cars/4wheelers. That's good to know they make a diesel oil maybe i'll use that. So sounds like everyone changes their oil every 3k. Anyone with synethetic go longer?

theres alotta guys going 5k+ or more on synthetic(more than 5K they have a bypass system though.. gotta change that filter!!) anyway i do 3k-4k max with dyno oil(running CI4 grade oil right now, ha ha yes very hard to get but the truck likes it way better than the new CJ4 standard, she purrs like a kitten starting in the 30's. not near as loud as with the delo i was running.

Blackstone Labs tells me 5200, I go 5200. 3-4 oil changes a year is enough to make me feel secure. Of course the fact that the big hoss is sittin at 381k miles makes me comfortable too :icon_ford: :thumb:

Yep

Rotella or motorcraft 15w-40, every 5,000 just like the manual recommends.
And yep... I use Motorcraft 15w-40 and change every 5k. You guys that change it every 3k must have deep pockets! :hehe:

Shell 15-40 with Lucas oil stabalizer. 10,000 miles. This is what we do in our semi's. 239,000 on my 7.3 and it gets worked on the farm HARD. Our 3 cummins have over 350,000 on them and they go 10,000 between changes. Call me crazy but works just fine for us.
I've heard from several people, that diesels tend to run better with a little dirty oil. So I don't doubt running 'em until 10k is okay and works well. :thumb:

If you had any understanding of the injectors in our trucks you would not do that.

Lucas makes the oil air entraped. Air is bad for our injectors.

The oil aditives which keep the foam down break down after about 3-4k, making more air in the oil and harder on the injectors.

STOP using the Lucas, it is the WORST thing you can pour inside of a powerstroke motor, WORST.

3-5k, no more.

When I first bougth the truck, I used 15w40 Motorcraft, every 5,000 miles. Blackstone also agreed that it was a good oil and a good interval. Then I discovered the awesomeness of Rotella 5w40 Synthetic and how awesome it makes the truck start in the cold. Blackstone agrees that it is a good oil and has cleared me for 6,000 miles, but I still change it every 5000. Makes it easy to remember when to change it.

Rotella 15w-40 every 3-4k here. Used to run a gallon of lucas every oil change. I do not recommend the lucas. It got to where after heavy acceleration it would run poorly, pop, buck, and snort until i killed it and let it sit 15 minutes or so. Luckily my injectors were already trash, but they have seem to gotten worse. Please do not put this in your powerstroke due to the high oil pressure. But a dodge or Dmax, i don't see a problem running lucas. Then again, who cares if they blow up. Haha.
