Hey
This is my first post! I just bought a 01 excursion 7.3l. Its a bit of a project however you always save the best till last. Truck has 167k miles.
Truck is throwing codes for all glow plugs ( cali truck with gpcm). Test the harness (ohm test) and it confirms the codes.
After much video watching and researching I decided to tackle the glow plug replacement myself.
Well...turns out the previous owner used autolite glow plugs and they are real effed.
Started on the drivers side. Gingerly took out cyl. 2 and 4 and they are very messed and the tips are swollen. Had to use a slightly larger socket to get some flex because there was always resistance taking out the plugs. A yways with carb cleaner abd pb they did come out. Cylinder 6 not so lucky, tip broke off the end of the plug (the part that heats up) and the rest came out.
Also cylinder 8 the wire connection tip broke off and is now in the push rod valley. Also, i cant get my 10mm socket on it. May grind a socket down a bit as i think its hitting the head bolt (hard to see).
I am debating on taking it in. I really do not want to pull the heads. After reading and searching i fou d the following:
-take injector out, smash the tip i to the cylinder and fish out the tip through the i jector hole (its hard to see as its cylinder 6)
- take head off( i really do not want to, maybe over and above my mechanical capability)
-smash tip into cylinder leave tip in cylinder and start motor, tip is made of porcelain and will smash to bits and leave peacefully (sounds like a real bad idea)
-carb cleaner and then crank the engine and or go for a drive. I maybe could cut the old glow plug down to thread on and maybe they will blow out? ( im doubtful of this because of how bad the first 2 plugs are)
Which method do you guys think is best for the autolite glow plugs? I have new motorcraft ones and a new uvch as the current one has damaged insulation.
My real question is, how do i get the autolites out without breaking anymore (ideally without taking the heads off). Im thinking of taking it to a shop and let them fuss over it. I also like saving money too and i feel a shop will be pricey these days. I could just put it back together and drive it to a shop worse case. I am in a heated garage and this vehicle is not my primary transportation currently. I do live in a very cold climate so all help is needed to get it going.
Pics or it didnt happen...(i broke the electrical tip off of six for reference to see what is in cylinder 8 push rod valley) )
-1 for autolite plugs.
