Fuel additives

Is there an article somewhere that would help me know which fuel additives to use? I have 7.3, 6.0, 6.7 as well as large diesel trucks I fill out of a bulk tank here. Can I just add the right amount to my 1,000 gallon tank and cover all equipment or does it ‘settle’ out? Does it need to be mixed somehow?

I'd recommend using an Opti-lube brand additive. They've got the testing to back-up their performance, and offer several different options that can be tailored to your specific location & needs:

There are dozens of threads discussing this topic, but here's a recent thread on Opti-lube for reference:

With the newer fuel systems it's not necessary to put anything in the fuel like the old days However I use cetane booster Motorcraft. i don't always use it. Just when I think about it. Not really sure it makes much of a difference. My diesel guy at my dealer says not many fuel pump issues but no additive will decontaminate your fuel. You get bad fuel then that will cause issues. There are lots of guys using Optilub in there trucks especally in the north where it snows.

OptiLube summer+ and OptiLube XPD in the winter (or year round if you’ve got the cash)

Better Diesel FBC if you still have the coal filter.

Part of the reason to run an additive is added lubrication. The other part is to pull water out…. So it doesn’t end up in your fuel pump.
Regarding the anti-gel; fuel suppliers usually treat to the average low temp. That doesn’t always work. Especially if you travel. I posted pics around here somewhere from BP diesel out of the pump and BP diesel with Amsoil additive. Left the fuel in mason jars overnight. The untreated fuel was cloudy when I woke up. Treated fuel was clear. You’d have to try pretty hard to overdose. Folks have come in here freaking out because they dumped a bottle in their tank before realizing it was for 250 gallons. They just drove it and it was fine.

Yep, optilube contains “demulsifier” which drops water out of suspension, much easier for the fcm to separate. Then you get added cetane which equates to more mpg. Anti-gel. Most importantly added lubricity.
Yes the manual says you dont “need” it. But the manual also said that for the cp4.1’s which blow up because people dont run it. So consider it insurance and piece of mind.

Optilube, Stanadyne, Power Service, Howe's, Ford brand sold at dealerships....take your pick. Make sure they don't use alcohol.

Not bashing Opti-Lube at all but I had a hard time ordering 55gal drums of it. We use Diesel Kleen/Power Service and have been since as far back as I can remember. Again nothing against Optiube just had harder time with bulk orders. Also if the 1000gal tank is gonna sit a while does it have a sump/water draw system at least? I can't be sure it wont settle but as a general rule of thumb let the tank get low, add the additive and then fill. The filling will help it mix unless you have someother way to slosh around 1k gallons haha.

I have run opti-lube XPD every tank since new. Zero issues runs smooth and quiet. I have 3 refillable jugs in my door filled by larger one with pump, very convenient dump one in everytime I duel up.

I also have a 6.0 and have noticed no difference with any additive I have used. No runnng better or improved MPG.

I have used Lucas Oil to the diesel for fuel injectors, Stabil Disel, Diesel Kleen also to the diesel. To the oil I have added Rev-X. No difference whatsoever.

Sometimes if I feel guilty for spending too much money on beer, I will buy Diesel Kleen and add that to my diesel and I feel better about myself. I still notice no difference in performance or MPG.

The only exception I would make is in a super cold climate where gelling of the diesel is a factor. Not here in sunny AZ.
