While crawling under my 2004 6.0 to change the fuel filter yesterday, I noticed the back of the front diff has a leak. I am assuming the seal needs to be replaced. If so how big of a job is this? I have a long trip coming up in a week so I am trying to address it before the trip. Not sure whether I can get an appointment at a repair shop in time....

Pinion seal isn't too bad, pop the shaft off, take the pinion nut off with a big breaker bar and a deep thin walled appropriate sized socket, I don't recommend using an impact due to bearings and gear teeth being back there on the pinion. Replace the seal, use a NEW nut, torque to spec, and use loctite. If you over torque it you will ruin the bearings. If you reuse the nut, it'll probably fall off and kill your diff.
If just going to be on the pavement for a road trip this isn't a big deal. Make sure hubs are manually unlocked and transfer case in 2wd, the front shouldn't spin.
