FICM Tune Options

It looks like I have four options to get a tune in my FICM from FICMrepair.com.

1. Just order a rebuilt FICM with the tune installed.
2. Like #1 above, but send my old FICM back for credit afterward.
3. Ship them my FICM for programming.
4. Rent the FICM tuner from them and program my existing FICM.

1. Most expensive option. Leaves me with a spare FICM.
2. Less expensive than #1.
3. Less expensive than #2.
4. Slightly more expensive than #3, but leaves FICM installed.

Am I missing anything here?

What would you guys do?

Have any of you ever programmed a FICM in the truck?

I didn't get around to actually doing it but I was going to do option #2 you have their. I was going to get the super duper rebuild or whatever they call it with the Atlas 40 tune and just mail my original back to them once I got it switched just because from the way I understood it you pretty much would never have to worry about the FICM after he did his magic.

So, hypothetically speaking...

Let's say I get my hands on a FICM tuner, and want to run PHP tunes.

How does that work from a licensing standpoint? Do I pay a fee for each different tune that I try, or does one license fee cover whichever of their tunes I choose to use?

Is there additional cost in switching from one tune to another, like from Eco to Atlas40 for example?

I am thinking of buying a used tuner.

Do I have use of the tunes that are already on it, or do I need to buy a license for my truck?

And is is tied to my truck, or the FICM?

It is tied to the FICM as far as I know because if your logic side ever fries you are out of luck

the tuner has a lot of model years worth of tunes written into it ,, you choose the year of your truck and the tune you want then the tuner selects the proper versions

ficm tunes may or may not behave ideally with all PCM tunes

I plan on using the ECO or Atlas40 with the MPD tune as someone has recommended here.

And I plan on installing the FICM tune first, as I am told the MPD tune will trigger a relearn cycle.

Last I tuned my 6.0L FICM the PHP device had several tunes stored. You choose which you wanted to run. In the end I had a spare FICM tuned by PHP with the Atlas 40, ended up selling the PHP device. Never had any desire or need to swap around FICM tuning.

Atlas 40 tuning alone gave me much better low end power off the line, not much at higher speeds.
Combined Atlas 40 with the TSP SPD tuning that 6.0L would whistle while at work!

Your FICM is not subjected to the adaptive tables, so tuning order should not be a factor
do the 40 IMO
Well, what I want to is a FICM tune and ECM tune. And I want to do the FICM first and drive it a while, and then possibly an ECM tune.

Some time between the two should allow me to see what sort of mileage changes I get from each.

Someone mentioned that the MPD tune does a (transmission?) relearn initially. It seems to make sense to have the FICM tune in place for that.

Not looking for huge performance gains, just improved response and mileage.

I ran a FICM tune on a PHP street tune for years with no issue.
I like that you are comparing one then the other.

Everytime you tune the ECM there will be a trans relearn which could skew your results a bit.

Not trying to come off rude here but it sure seems like you are overthinking this haha. While having the FICM tuner with the ability to switch the tune would be nice most people who were tuning their FICMs realized they would rarely switch them, which is why alot just opt for the mail in their old FICM and get the Atlas 40 put on.

When you get the MPD tune it is like all ECM tuning that will tune your engine and tranny, so yeah it has a slight relearn but isn't that big of a deal. Basically don't go switching it around constantly and just romping on it immediately and you'll be fine.

The doing the FICM first and then adding ECM tuning later is a good idea for comparing and knowing what helped where. I am still disappointed I never got around to getting the Atlas 40 on my 6.0 before I got rid of her.
