Which one is better and why?

SCT because we say so!!!!

LOL.....SCT tunes the transmission as well which is key to getting the 5R to live with added power. Also the SCT tunes are customizable - the edge isnt.

Edge monitors are the bomb.com though!!

Edge tuning is "one size fits all" tuning.

SCT allows the custom tune writer to adjust to your driving habits and engine mods.

For tuning the SCT is vastly superior in every possible way.

For monitoring though the CS or CTS insight are superior.

A lot of guys on here run both, the CTS for monitoring, and the SCT for tunes.

The SCT has the capability for custom tuning almost every parameter in the 6.0, including transmission. The edge is just a generic tuner with little to no tranny tuning, and less power.

It's like getting a tuxedo... Edge would be an off the shelf tux with standard sizes.... SCT would be a custom tailored tux measured to you.

Hope this helps!

so im curious when it comes to sct trans tuning... I run the edge insight cs for monitoring and the sct sf3 model 3015 now the edge, banks, and hypermax all say they do "trans tuning" does anyone has an explanation on what makes the trans tuning of the sct superior ? Im not trying to start a debate but a comment above said the "edge tuning is not specifically" for the ford 6.0's where the sct is...

just curious for myself and new guys why the tuners all say trans tuning on website yet the sct is only better because of custom tuning?

When the other companies say they do trans tuning, they are most likely just bumping up the line pressure and that's it. Try 3-4 different tunes from the custom tuners out there and no 2 tuners have the same shift strategy... And you can request specific tuning options for your tranny like early TC lockup, or lockup in 4th gear, or stay locked in coast, or firmer shifting, or different shift points, etc... Edge, Hypermax, Banks, none of them do that. You can't call or email them and request them to change something about your tune that you want changed. That's why its called generic, it's one size fits all.

And unless you have an SCT with SCT's canned tunes, it's not the SCT that is superior, it's the tuners who write the custom tunes. It's just simply the best platform for the tune writers to write their tunes on.

Buy an Edge tuner, do you need to give them your PCM strategy? Or your TCM strategy? Do they ask if you have headstuds? Do they ask what mods you have done to your truck? Nope. The custom tuners do because they know that each of those questions will change how the tune is written for your truck. The tune writing for my truck will be different than the tune writing for your truck, different PCM strategies, different programming, etc.

Now you can get decent power gains from en Edge, but if you're looking to squeeze the most HP out of your truck, then the custom tunes will win 10 times out of 10. That's why the most Edge advertises is 120 RWHP gain, if you get the unlocked platinum model, its 100 hp for the regular juice with attitude. Get an SCT 3015 from Innovative with his tuning (just using them as an example) and he advertises gains of 180 RWHP. So with an Edge, the most you're going to get is ~360-380 RWHP. The Innovative will be somewhere around ~440 RWHP on his full fuel tune. And most custom writers are all pretty close on RWHP numbers. It's the nuances in their tuning that make them stand apart from each other.

As far as SCT canned tunes tranny tuning, couldn't say if its better or not, never used them. However Edge has gotten the reputation for being tranny killers... Both in 7.3's and 6.0's.

I understand the argument with custom tuning. Just curious if anyone has gotten an asnwer on what they (sct) vs edge banks etc do... do you know for sure that edge only bumps up pressure on the 6.0 trans for "trans tuning" vs what does sct do thats different, more effective etc... because some custom tuners ask for trans tune while others do not so what does that mean in regards to trans tuning.... I'm gonna send them an email and call both edge and sct seem to answer most questions I have and I ask alot haha.

if anyone else has ever asked the programing companys what do do to tune the transmission let me know. Im gonna post the answers they give me, not just for myself but im sure others want to know why other then just custom tunes the sct is superior for our fast but picky motors haha.

again just wanting to see the reason sct is superior other then custom tuning when it comes to trans etc...

Yes you can put 3 custom tunes on that programmer, there are many venders that offer.m custom tunes. A few of them are innovative diesel, Tony wildman, and gearhead.

I have the edge platinum juice with attitude and can control a lot of transmission parameters right off my setup screen on the fly. I can control tc lockup, shift firmness, shift points, slip percentage for each gear, etc. I have perf diesel custom tunes on my edge. 5 different tunes at the touch of a button. I went from an sct sf3 to the edge about a year ago and aint looking back. I love it. Its also the unit recommended by perf diesel who has done the work on my truck, and i trust them.

well I sent emails to: SCT, Banks, Edge, and Hypermax and will post the response as soon as i get them...

Also your the first one ive ever seen switch from sct I like my SCT but honestly I have never seen technical data to show its transmission tuning is superior or safer only the "custom tunes" arguement and well that can't be beat haha but I would love a on the fly or is my tuner bad haha it takes me over 10 min to switch tunes with sct, newest updates haha.

again not trying to start a debate and will post the response from the above companys in regards to how and what they do to program the trans to match added power to engine etc...

I bought an SCT Livewire about three weeks ago and got the EGT probe kit from JMS Chip and have had nothing but trouble with it! EGT's reading works sporadically and no one can seem to tell me why. JMS says nothing wrong with probe, and I tend to agree since it does give accurate readings sometimes. SCT is telling me it's the probe or the custom tunes. If I had it to do over I would by the Edge CTS and just get an x3 tuner from SCT.

Has anyone else had this problem with the Livewire?

again this is not to dog on sct or any other programmer but i got an email response back from Edge and Sct so far... and they tune the transmissions the same way...

from edge:
The Evolution tuners have built in power levels specific to each power level and the Juice with Attitude CS and CTS has an available transmission tune that works with all of the power levels available on that device. The Juice with Attitude tune mainly firms up and quickens the shift so that there is less potential for slippage.

from Sct:
The device does tune the transmission also. What gets changed depend on what tune you load and what you adjust in the user option. For the most part it is going to change the shift scheduling to keep you in the power band longer. Also like you mention you can change the shift firmness, Tire size, axle ratio, and WOT shift points by Gear in the user options. These option all have an effect on the transmission tune . Any other question email me back.

so Edge AND Sct change the firmess, and shift patterns to reduce slippage for added power and change shift scheduling...

so far banks and hypermax have not emailed me back yet... but has anyone gotten a more detailed response back from the above tuners on more specifically how? because according to the above the edge and sct tune transmissions the same way... the sct just has ability for custom tuning.

but Im just talking about trans tuning here.

If you want more in depth detail between the different controllers, try to contact Eric from Innivative, I believe he wrote the canned tunes for the SCT. For the Edge, contact Bill at PHP, I believe he had a lot to do with the canned tunes for Edge.

Or you could looks for old threads on this forum and others. Several SCT tune writers and Edge representatives have made post about the trans tuning. There also has been post from BullyDog, Banks, Superchips, and Hypertech about there trans tuning.

I can't remember the details of these posts, but from what I remember, only SCT came out on top.

gotcha and thanks. ya I just hear sct sct sct!!! but they only use the 2 arguements: custom tuning and trans tuning. Im just looking for solid answers from the programmers i guess, im a very skeptical person at the least so i normally don't take peoples word for it.

I do however love my sct and have never personally used a banks, edge etc...

I'll do some more emailing/calling and see what I can find and post the info etc..

i tried searching the forum to if anyone has a link or remembers something post it on up :D

My questions are a little closer to being answered. I wondered if the Edge Evo that came in my truck would be OK for me or if I was going to wish for the fancier SCT. Since I'm not a "stomp on it from light to light" guy, it seems like there is no reason I should need custom tunes written just for me. The unit in my truck has 5 power levels and I doubt I'll ever drive with #5 engaged except to see what it was like. If I had a nitrous system a bottle would last a long long time. I suppose if I was guaranteed a beefy MPG increase by buying a custom tuner with a tune written just for me, I might go for it depending on the price. For now, I think I can live with 5 generic power levels (at $0 extra cost)

But that's just me. A lot of guys want the absolute best, performance and otherwise. I tend to settle for pretty good.

so far no work from banks, hypermax yet... figured Banks being as big as they were would answer quickly...

so from a pretty naive stance I don't see a problem with edge units so far, but the custom tune arguement is settled 100% i believe. I'll call banks and all the tuner companys to try and get some more detailed info soon etc, just been swamped at work lately.

will update asap guys!
