Edge programmer

I am looking to install an edge programmer into my 2003 7.3 I have been looking on the interweb and can pick up a used one for a considerable discount. Do I need to know anything about an unlock or anything other than the EGT probe that I would need to go with it. I am looking to increase my mileage a bit since I am driving between michigan and alabama till I retire in June. I am taking some small trailers down during that time, and would like to know if the programmer will help with the mileage.
I am not afraid of a wrench, and am not to bad at a rebuild on a car. I just have not messed with diesels in the past. I am not looking to "shred" the tires, just increase the mileage.

Talk to @Corey@CNCFAB and get a Hydra instead. Your transmission will thank for it. Use the Edge for monitoring.

What specifically is wrong with the edge programmer that is hard on the transmission? I ask because I have had a ‘00 F450 with an edge programmer for a week. The previous owner rebuilt the trans 1,000 miles ago, and had rebuilt it twice before that. He owned the truck for 10 years.

3 rebuilds with only 204k on the truck sounded like a lot to me, but I know this trans is the weak point.

Highly encourage you too consider getting the hydra chip and just an edge insight monitor vs the programmer combo from edge. The newer edge programmers have a bad reputation for power and bad shifting. Mainly because of emissions laws and generic tuning. The 7.3ls have whats called a ecm hex code and software calibration meaning each truck has a different set of parameters for performance, shifting and other features. To take your truck to the next level with maximum blend of performance and reliability look into the PHP Hydra chip. You select various tunes for your trucks specific hex code. ranging from no start, valet, tow, performance, and daily driver programs. Also switch on the fly vs waiting 10+ minutes for the edge flash programmers.

Only con is spending more money because of buying a chip and an edge insight monitor but trust me and 99.9% of others its the way to go.

The only way of doing it the OK way is with older generations of edge programs the edge model 15000 "looks like an old gamboy was a decent unit, and the edge evo 2 model 15001 has OK shifting and power but still generic. But the edge 15001 is a monitor/programmer combo. Bill the owner/tuner from power hungry did work with superchips and edge early on and the edge 15000 and 15001 are his programs but again generic and not the best.

@Corey@CNCFAB is a good vendor that can help with pricing.

*also to help your question a programmer will only help a little at the very most for mpg. trucks gain the most from reduced speeds and aerodniamcs. A tonneau cover generally gives pickups 1-1.5mpg boost at high way speeds and is very affordable. after that it gets cost prohibitive to make wallet saving changes on pickups etc.

He's right you know^^^^

Juice with attitude is $999

Insight CTS2 w/ egt probe and Hydra is $150 less.

thanks for the information. I am sitting up here in the great white north with no place to work on the truck till I can get a thaw out. I am due to retire in June and will be heading to Alaska for a trip in the motorhome. Once that is done I will be moving to Alabama, where I am currently remodeling a house for retirement. I still need to build a shop to work in. So I guess the truck will have to wait a year, but it still runs fine, I just thought it would be ok to upgrade it now.

I can’t answer your question with any actual facts because I’m not a mechanic, but I can say that before when I had my edge my trans had a slip when taking off from a stop. Enough that I asked about it here. After putting in the Hydra it was instantly better by 50% and now is pretty much gone. At the same time shifts are still firm but not as violent. So, ya, it does seem to make the trans happier. Overall I love Hydra. Hit @Corey@CNCFAB up. He’ll take care of you.
