I know there have a few posts in the past about these oil coolers but i thought i would share an experience of a friends truck.

A few months ago a friend noticed moisture around his oil cooler cover and also his past 2 oil analysis' showed a small amount of coolant in his oil. As of the past few weeks he's noticed the runnability going down hill, we tested the ficm and found out it was bad so it was replaced with a tuned piece from Ed i believe. After the new ficm was installed the truck seemed to run a little better but still wasnt 100%. So next we did a power contribution test on the injectors and found only 2 cylinders with no "counts" on the scanner, he bit the bullet and 8 new injectors were ordered.

Last night he starts tearing the truck apart to find the water leak is coming from and finds this (pics below) when he pulls the oil cooler out. Apparently the dorman oil cooler gasket isnt compatible with oil? Also the small handle on the screen had come off and was laying in the valley of the oil cooler. The screen was almost completely plugged from broken down gasket and unfortunately the screen did have a tear in it. My thoughts are the screen plugged then tore and now gasket material may have gotten into the injectors causing his problems? The truck was "bullet proofed" about 3 years ago he thinks, he couldn't remember the exactly mileage.

As for the cooler itself he said after 3 years it had a 12 degree delta but obviously if you do decide on an aftermarket cooler at the very least use ford gaskets.

Just wanted to share his experience.

Gasket? The rubber seal around the cover? It's all rubber o-rings and molded seals.

what color was the gasketand thanks for sharing.i've seen this happen with the cheap ebay coolers people bring me.i turn them away as i will not install the cheap ebay with the green gasket.that gasket i know for a fact is not compatible.

fords is light blue and rudy's is like a purple or at least the ones i've ordered were.i will say it also depends on the coolant you use.if you use the green crap from auto zone there's your problem.if you use ec1 or g05 or other high grade then your good.

Wow, reason I'd asked is I wouldn't have though the rubber seal would have reacted that way.

I don't know how Dorman blew the seal quality it isn't a mystery what is comparable with oil and coolants but they did they screwed it up to save a penny and now we all pay for their stupidity

I read about other component failures from Dorman on different vehicles

the sad part is it's only people in the know like on Forums that get word out like the one here has been circulating for a while

every other poor DIY Sonofabiotch that walks in to Autozone or the equal is going to get farked
not to mention a lot of shops other than OEM use this crap

Just another reason that just because someone says their truck has been "bulletproofed" that doesn't mean it actually has been. You use cheap crap on your truck, and you can expect these kinds of consequences...

Sorry that your buddy has to deal with this, but Zmann is absolutely correct. We TRY to get the word out and people roll the dice either knowingly through their own decision or unknowingly through an incompetent diesel tech....

Dorman strikes again.

Do not under any circumstances use Dorman parts an a 6.0. This is probably the thousandth one of their oil coolers fail this year alone
