Early 99 has a wicked wheel in it from the factory.

The early99 has 130cc(AB code) injectors and the late99-03 has 140cc(AD code) injectors.

The early99 has 2" intake runners. The late99-03 has 3" intake runners.

The early99 has a 15* swash plate HPOP. The late99-03 has a 17* swash plate HPOP.

The early99 has one glow plug relay. The late99-03 has one glow plug relay and one air intake heater relay side by side. Both relays are on the passenger side valve cover toward the front of the truck.

The early99 has a totally different air filter that is not inter changeable with the late99-03. But you can put the late99 air cleaner assembly in the early99 truck. The only two aftermarket air filters that work on the early99 are the AFE stage 2 and the AIS.

The early99 track rod has smaller mounting bolts than the late99-03. Stock rod replacement bushings, Prothane bushing part # is 61217BL.

The early99 has shallower rotors than the late99-03.

The early99 has shorter hub-bearings than the late99-03.

The early99 front axle U bolts are square where they go over the spring pack. The late99 U bolts are round.

The early99 has a different pitman arm than the late99-03.

The early99 does not have the AIH like the late99-03.

The early99 does not have the automatic transmission fluid cooler in the radiator.

The early99 has no indicator light showing that "cruise" is on. Late99-03 has a cruise light that will come on when you set the cruise control. Some of the early99 truck have this light in the dash already. A newer PCM(Yes it will plug in and will run better too) must be used to make the cruise light illuminate. It is a green light on the right side edge, half way up.

my late 99 came with telascoping mirrors. and it says that wasnt introduced till 00.. my build date is 3/?/99

I heard rumor that the early 99’s had taller blocks in the rear axle and old guys complained about the problems it caused with 5th wheel campers so Ford lowered the superdutys in 99.5?
I know my truck sits about 2” higher than all the 99.5-03s at work.

This may be a bit obscure but the power steering pump shaft is a larger diameter in the early 99's than any after. It's the same as the 97's. Try and find a new power steering pump pulley and you will understand.:tard:

My truck has a build date of 8 of 98. Just got it, so don't know much about it. It has only 78,000 original miles on it .bought it from the original owner. what can I do to inprove the fuel milage an power on it. The truck is an F350 4x4 crewcab long box ,6 spd manual with 3:73 rearends. Lariet package. Someone on here was mentioning saying about replace a box with a later built one. Could someone help me out. Thanks Ron

Great post guys. I just bought my 99 F350 so I had no clue there were any model year differences. Ford has been doing this crap for years. My truck according to the door tag was produced 4/98 maybe a prototype :). The truck has 272,000 on it so who knows what has been changed. It has the front feed airbox and fender badges. I am going to check my cruise next. Is there any lockout differences (dayum autolocks) wheres the engineer that came up with that idea ? Did we not learn from the vaccum wipers of years past:confused::dunno: Thanks again for sharing great knowledge.

Curious .:dunno:
Mod the 2" boost tube and up grade the xle series.................
go 4" turbo back,,,,,,tune,,,,and maybe I can get 250 hp on my early 99.:hehe:
Oh yah go big air...........
What is the 2" boost tube?

When you say upgrade the xle series, do you mean swap the PCM out with one from 99.5-01?

I have door badges, a cruise light, but I have body trim on the bed, and lumbar support....

I also can't find a date code tag ANYWHERE on the damn truck...am I blind, stupid, or both?

Now I really want to know if it's a early or late 99...:tard:

Go back to the first post and take a look at some of the differences. One would be the sticker on the valve covers.

The other is how many relays do you have on the passenger side valve cover behind the AC compressor?

If you try to put your hand on the top of the turbo, how much room is there? Can you fit your fist between the top of the turbo and the cowl or do you have to flatten your hand to get it up there?

#90 ·
I would, except the truck isn't here....but judging by the turbo surge I get, and the lack of turbo "whine/whistle", I'd say it's a 99.5.

I didn't think to look at the housing when I did the exhaust, I just know it was tight as hell to get that DP on and off :p.

The sticker on the valve cover will tell me what? I re-read, and didn't see.

The sticker on the valve cover will give you an actual date of build for the engine. It could have worn off due to cleaning with cleaners but it usually is there. If not, take a look at the other things in the questions in my post above and get back back when you can. If you answer those three questions I can tell you what year you have. It does sound like it is a late99 or 99.5.

Ok, after looking like some sort of crazy *** at 12am with a flashlight in my PJ's under the hood of the Ford, I found the motors date being dec 22, '98, the front axle U bolts are square(ish) on the front axle, and there's two brown round looking things with wires coming out of them on the passenger front top of the motor.

BUT, it does look like I could get my fist up between the cowl and the turbo, but I have tiny girl hands, and didn't really try.

Poor guy, you got the new fangled young whippersnapper truck. Only us old school conventional guys get the privilege of driving a true American work of art, the Early 99, the first of the best.

I have just bought a 99 powerstroke with a build date of 12/14/98. I know the turbo is and early turbo but the airbox intake is a late cause it comes from the front. Is there any way to tell what injectors and HPOP I may have in this truck? Also I have a Banks six gun chip and AEM intake but only can get 15-16 boost. Is this right or should I be getting more? What other mods would be good for this truck to make more power?

#98 ·
A custom chip will get you the most out of your truck.

You say the turbo is an early turbo. Does it have any reinforcing ribs on the compressor housing? How many bolts hold the compressor housing on, 4 or 5?

#99 ·
Thanks for the info and I was thinking about a different chip either TS ar DP. Can I stack either one of these with my Banks Chip? Also my turbo does have ribs on the housing. I had seen a pic online and it showed the early one as gold color and no ribs and the late one as a silver color and ribs. Mine is gold in color and thats why I originally thought it was early but since it does have the ribs on the housing does that make it a late 99? Also one other quick question I am wanting to put some mitered stacks on my truck but is there ever any problem with water getting in there when it rains and causing a problem if it sits in there a few days without being driven?

#100 ·
The water is not going to get into the engine unless you get 2' plus of rain the the stacks. If you are worried about this you can either put coffee cans over the stacks or drill a couple of 1/4" holes at the elbow under the truck where it attaches to the main exhaust system(I did this).

The color of the turbo is only an indication of how hot the turbo has been. The turbo gets hot with oil on it and it gets a nice gold patina on it. If your turbo has the ribs on it, then it is a late99.

A chip from DP or Tony Wildman is what I would recommend. It can be stacked with another chip. If it is a banks 6gun then it is an over glorified 10K mod and it can be stacked but you will not see much if any gains from stacking. It may help down low but it will fall on it's face a lot faster when you get the RPM up.
