Early 99 has a wicked wheel in it from the factory.

The early99 has 130cc(AB code) injectors and the late99-03 has 140cc(AD code) injectors.

The early99 has 2" intake runners. The late99-03 has 3" intake runners.

The early99 has a 15* swash plate HPOP. The late99-03 has a 17* swash plate HPOP.

The early99 has one glow plug relay. The late99-03 has one glow plug relay and one air intake heater relay side by side. Both relays are on the passenger side valve cover toward the front of the truck.

The early99 has a totally different air filter that is not inter changeable with the late99-03. But you can put the late99 air cleaner assembly in the early99 truck. The only two aftermarket air filters that work on the early99 are the AFE stage 2 and the AIS.

The early99 track rod has smaller mounting bolts than the late99-03. Stock rod replacement bushings, Prothane bushing part # is 61217BL.

The early99 has shallower rotors than the late99-03.

The early99 has shorter hub-bearings than the late99-03.

The early99 front axle U bolts are square where they go over the spring pack. The late99 U bolts are round.

The early99 has a different pitman arm than the late99-03.

The early99 does not have the AIH like the late99-03.

The early99 does not have the automatic transmission fluid cooler in the radiator.

The early99 has no indicator light showing that "cruise" is on. Late99-03 has a cruise light that will come on when you set the cruise control. Some of the early99 truck have this light in the dash already. A newer PCM(Yes it will plug in and will run better too) must be used to make the cruise light illuminate. It is a green light on the right side edge, half way up.

John was busy today and could not talk. But he said it was interesting that a manual has a cooler in the radiator and the auto doesn't.

Do all manual transmissions have a fluid cooler?

They started the door badges in the Fall of '98, I got some and put them on my early 99 that was built in like 3-98. It was a 6spd and it had a cooler, it also had a whole lot smaller turbo than my 99.5 and had A LOT LESS power too I only kept it a year.

the turbos were the same size, just different wheel. ours is by no means slow and it has a banks chip. the previous owner pulled an 11k 5th wheel toy hauler and said he could pull it 250miles back from glamis with the cruise at 60and never downshift and never slow down. that doesnt seem slow to me

The turbo is smaller than the late99. The injectors are smaller hence the lower power rating. However the differences between the turbos is an advantage since it does not surge that easy at all.

Here is some good reading: The TheDieselStop.Com 1999-up FAQ

i read somehwere on here that the wheels were diferent but could be swapped. how can a bigger turbo use a small wheel?
that site said 235hp, is that at the wheels? the valve cover on mine says 250hp

The wheel is the same, yes. But the housing is larger on the 99.5. See for yourself:

ok i stand corrected the later ones are bigger. how do they make more boost when they use the same wheel? with the banks chip i can get it to 21psi uphill at wot and cruising at 60 it runs 16-18. are those good numbers?
anybody know if the 235hp is wheel hp? what do the late 99s valve cover say for hp?
and that other site says all late 99s had passenger air bags, early 99s dont? how do you know if you do?
thanks

The late99 does not make more boost than the early99. My early99 stock turbo with a banks big head would make 32psi but I was running real tuning.....:pointlaugh:

Yours sounds kind of low even for banks tuning.

The bigger turbo does not flow more air but the housing made it whistle less, some said it was annoying.

My truck has passanger air bags. Look above the glove box, there should be the outline of a flap with a stamp in the vinyl that says "SRS".

Mine hit 28-30 psi with stock injectors and 32 with my new injectors. I hear banks stuff is way overpriced and kinda weak. I have a key switch above my dash drink holder to turn the passenger air bag on or off and there is an orange “off” light that lights near the key when the truck is first started. I hear that in 2000-2001 they changed the rods from forged to powder which only matters if you’re hitting like 450+ hp. older model forged rods are better of course.

I have been horn swaggled then, my valve cover says 235hp.

Not that my truck is near that now but what the heck, you gotta start somewhere.

thats i thought, thats why i asked before i did it
so i guess ours just have more power then the others:hehe:
then agian maybe not:mad:
i think ill call ford and ask:doh: (jk)

Nope. I can pretty much promise that you have XLE series pcm. No more power for you :)

Find a PMT1 or PMT2 and upgrade. I went from the XLE4 to FIF3 (which I was told was from a 00, but everything I show it's a 99 also) BACK to the XLE4 and now PMT2.

I still don't have the fancy "cruise light", but the engine runs MUCH smoother. Trans is another story. We'll see how much better it is after I install a valve body.

1st not only is the track bar bolts smaller but the whole bar is smaller.

2nd the whole steering was changed not just the pitman arm. Ask me how I know.

3rd both of my early 99's had 250 on the valve cover. I think the difference between the 235 and the 250 has to do with International tuning and not Ford's.

4th Im pretty sure all manuals have a fluid cooler in the radiator since they use auto tranny instead of gear lube. Both of my early 99's do.

5th early 99's had the badges on the fender and 99.5's were "supposed" to be the start of the badges on the door. But we know that changes.

If I can think of any other things I will post them.

Don't rely on the location of the badge. If the badge is on the fender, it is and early99 but just because the badge is on the door does not mean it is a late99. My early99 had door badges.

I replaced every part in the steering system of my truck and there was no difference in the parts with regards to early99-late99. All the tie rods were the same for the years, not early specific.

I swapped out my track rod for the late99 when I lifted my truck. The lift kit came with a late99 bracket. I got the late99 track rod and installed it in my truck. The rod was the same diameter and same length. The difference I noticed was the early99 was a forged 1 piece rod and the new one was a steel bar with the ends welded on. The diameter of the rod was the same as my early99. I drilled out the bracket on the axle and a new bolt came with the lift kit. Now I have a late99 track rod in my early99.

I bought all my parts from Napa.
