Did 1997 7.3 OBS’s come with catalytic converters?

Good afternoon, all:

I’m new—and confused.

I recently purchased a ‘97 F250 HD with a 7.3. After bringing it home, I realized it doesn’t have a cat. As a matter of conscience, I like to do things legally, so I began to research whether my truck was supposed to have a cat.

I found online that OBS PSD’s from 94-97 had cats, but that some Super Duty trucks did not. To know if the truck came with a cat, and whether a cat is legally required, I found that I should look for a sticker that indicates whether the truck was catless or had an emissions system. My truck’s sticker states it has a an emissions system, including a “CO,” which I understand to be a cat.

So I began searching for a suitable cat and diesel shop to install the cat. But I couldn’t find any OEM OBS cats online. Additionally, when I called two local diesel mechanics, but assured me that OBS 7.3’s did NOT come with cats, or at least that they had never seen one. One mechanic explained he told me he owns seven 7.3’s and the other told me his shop only works on PSD’s and they have never seen an OBS 7.3 with a cat.

Finally, one mechanic told me that if I installed a cat, I would “clog up” and destroy the motor within 5-10k miles because those engines are not designed to work with a cat.

So, can anyone confirm whether Ford made OBS 7.3’s with cats? I am thoroughly confused here. Additonally, would it damage my truck to install a cat, assuming it’s legally required?

Thank you so much.

All 94-97 OBS trucks had CATs from the factory. They stopped putting them on the 99+ SD trucks for a bit, but then put them on again. My 94 F350 CC DRW RSD had one. My 97 SC 4x4 PSD has one. A long time ago, I actually bought a brand new take-off CAT from an SD on ebay for $10. The cross-section is round where the OBS CATs are oval. The flange to the downpipe is also opposite of the OBS as well. It could be made to work though. If you do look for one, make sure it's for a diesel (if it's correct it will not hurt the engine). Here's the label and the CAT on my 97. Cheers!
