Hello everyone.
I have a 16 with about 75K miles on it. I have been researching the CP4 and how it can fail and what happens when it does. Do any of you use any of the kits out there and if so which ones. What are the pros and cons of the different kits? I know some do not filter return fuel and some do. I am sure I need to do something just not sure which way to go.

Thanks,

I used to say SPE had my favorite kit.... but they are just proving to be another disappointing performance company. I am a big fan of the S&S diesel kit that has the return filter as well. Very high quality and very good filtering. I really like that you can see a clear filter bowl under the hood and visually see what your fuel is like.

I read today that an SPE installed kit had a CP4 failure and the pressure blew a hole in the mesh screen which ended up sending debris back to the tank.

They are not a 100% fail safe but greatly reduce the amount of affected areas that need to be replaced in the event of a failure BUT.... you have the cp4.2 which is a little better than the earlier model. Run a qualify fuel additive and change filters with OEM MOTORCRAFT REGULARLY.

I would still drop the tank and flush the lines regardless of the additional return filter on some cp4 kits. Anytime a mental chunk explodes due to lack of lubrication I wouldn't trust a filter 100%. The kits again are not 100% fail safe but just a reduction in in cost to repair in the event. So the important part of the kit worked by returning it to the tank but the newer addition failed but even then 99% would drop the tank as an insurance measure.

We don't run any cp4 kits on the fleet trucks because the boss says so but we run fuel additive and change the filters often even with the added expense it hasn't added up more than the repair cost.

In your opinion which additives work well? What do you use? I do see several options to choose from.

Ive been researching disaster prevention kits and was about to pull the trigger on the SPE kit. had not seen the S&S kit before. That filter seems much better made than the SPE one. Much bigger filter area vs the round disk.

I have their kit on my truck and I haven't decided if I am going to take it off or pray it works. I wish I knew about S&S 2 months ago. Customer service is trash, attitude from Dan is a huge put off. I should have just not gotten their kit after a convo with him. They do not take responsibility for part failures and will blame other things or even tell you incorrect info about your truck being the cause. They also make you think you NEED the parts on your truck for your truck to work right like Ford screwed up. For example you NEED a CCV reroute because its horrible for your truck and it won't work right unless its rerouted. Then if you ask them about issues with your turbo seals or CC pressure they will say there is noooo way the vent they sold you is the problem like its a completely unrelated component. I am not even all that happy with the parts quality. Its fine but nothing to make up for it not working as well as competition. Their parts are like shiny turds. Can look cool and probably sounds cool and might make you look like you have "performance" but the reality is still a turd. My impression is they are the kinda truck drivers they roll coal, blare music at the gas station while they fill up, take up 4 parking spaces in the front, have super high lift with tiny wheels, and drive around with a huge superiority complex. Even though not every part they make is crap I prefer not to support them with my business any longer.

Very well said. I also forgot to mention that when I had their DPK, it would drain the rails at WOT and get reduced power message/limp mode. Of course they said it wasn't from their kit, but it 100% was.

Based on @Bhelm's description of the folks at SPE I dont think Id like to do business with them. Im on the cusp of pulling the trigger and glad to hear these reviews. The only thing I really wanted to avoid was a kit that had me cut the hard fuel lines. Sounds like the Gen2 S&S is the way to go.

Only thing that makes me go "huh" is the 2 micron return filter. The Ford OEM fuel filter is 4 micron. That 2 micron filter is going to remove more stuff than the Ford OEM filter would. Isnt that going to cause the return filter to fill up over time even without a failure?

Just a bit of devil's advocate here on dealing with SPE. I ordered the CCV reroute from them and had no issues other than a slow shipping deal. But I did order a part that on their site said it was on backorder so went into it knowing it would be awhile and actually got it quicker than expected. They did a solid job of staying in touch with me to keep me updated. Are they the best place out there? I'm not sure. But the @Bhelm did put in his disclaimer that they may not be as bad as he makes them sound already haha.

So in general here that is two reviews, that to be kind, were less than impressed and one that was satisfied but not blown away by them.

I installed the SPE kit on my 2013. I liked the no cutting of lines and it's compact. View attachment 777169
They aren’t the only ones with kits that don’t involve cutting lines…. So oh well. But yes it’s definitely more compact if that’s more valuable to the user. The filter for the S&S is much larger.
