Buy a used SCT X4 or just go new?

I just bought another 6.0 after missing my old one and got rid of my 6.7 but it’s been a while and I know this question may seem dumb but can you buy any used X4 as long as it’s unmarried and it have canned tunes for a 6.0 on it? I was thinking about getting the SRL from Gearhead but I saw on the website that it says you have to have a functioning EGR cooler/valve and their tunes don’t enable the EGR turn off function on your tuner. Is that just to cover their hide or can I really not delete it with their tunes?

If you can find a used sct that didn't get the most recent update you'll have the egr function you want. SCTFlash was forced to run an update that removed the egr off function when they got hit by the EPA. Most tuners are getting big fines from the EPA do some googeling and you'll find real tuners with solutions. Most won't mention names on the forum because we have had actual folks trying to rat out businesses etc. Many of the Cummins forums are not locked out unless you get an invite to vet you etc. Just the way things have been going for a while.

Just leave the valve plugged in. Gearhead (claims) to have never written tunes that purposely turned-off the CEL. I cannot verify that claim.

But I...uh...know someone...who has all of their tunes and isn't running an EGR. Just the valve plugged in. No CEL.

That said, if I could find a used...non-updated...un-married tuner, I'd go that route. It would help me sleep better at night. I'm weird, though, and spend $ pursuing dumb **** to make myself feel better.

YMMV

Yeah I’ll find a used one on marketplace and get some tunes by them. At first I’ll just run the canned tow tune but my biggest concern is do I have to have one specifically loaded with 6.0 tunes on it or does every SCT X4 made for fords have the correct tunes on it when you choose your vehicle during setup? My last 6.0 had custom tunes on a livewire already when I bought it so I feel dumb but I just want to make sure before I spend the $200 on a used one.

I've heard the canned tunes are horrible and shouldn't be used for a number of reasons. I'm sure there're a few decent posts on here as to 'why'.

Were it me I'd just roll with the SRL (or any other custom tune) before I tried the tunes included with the tuner.

I'm on my way out the door otherwise I'd find it, but I have a post on here (somewhere) regarding my SCT X4: the date of purchase, the "update version", etc. etc. It may be of some use to you in your hunt. This was from 2018, I think. Either way, my device works but I've never tried to unplug my EGR valve. I'll give that a try this weekend...for science. I'll post an update afterward.

I ran the canned tow tune, transmission only tune and the 100perf tune for years with no issues on a 2004 and a 2006 F350. The transmission tune just firmed up the shifting and I ran that maybe 70% of the time. I ran tow tune for camping and when I did road trips with no trailer I ran stock of the 100perf tune.

Well it just works out that my friend is trading his 6.0 in on a 17 6.7. His X4 still has the EGR delete option so I’m buying it from him. The only issue I’m still left with is where to get some good custom tunes without worrying about my delete function going away because I’m kinda iffy on running the canned tunes.

I've been alternating between the Street and Performance tunes on a stock SCTX4 without any problems for over two years. They both feel solid to me.

It will probably prompt you to update, but you shouldn't have to. It's been a while since I messed with one though, that could have changed.
