Buy 2017 or a 2018

Hello all. I am almost ready to purchase a new ride. It seems that there are plenty of 2017s on the lots with the features that I want. There are also plenty of 2018s. Seems that the rebates are not that far apart from the 2017 vs 2018. Is the 2017 build that good to not worry about first year issues? Go for the 2018? Thank you for the help.

Not sure 10 more HP and 10 more lb ft of torque is going to make the 17s feel like a pinto.

Used to like them Pintos....well other than the explosiveness of them. Bro owned one (his first car) and wasn't too bad of a car really. Ok....ok....it was a piece of chit. Who am I kidding?!?!?

If your buying off the lot, comes down to finding a truck that has the options you want. Picked a 17 XLT because it has premium package with heated seats. It fit my needs. Just have a few add ones (5th wheel prep) that I have to do.

IMO, it isn't JUST the small savings you can get on a '17 v. '18 It is the fact that 17 was the first year of major changes. Always buy a 2nd year or more if you can get one at a nearly equivalent price. Now if you're talking $10K less, it is worth the risk.

Next year would be a different story. (i.e. 2018 v 2019)

In the same boat. While the MSRP and Invoice price is not that different between the 17 and 18 (for my build, it looks like 6k), I have found that my dealer is willing to work the price on the 17 to move them off the lot prior to 18’s arriving.

After the first chat on the lot, I was under invoice by 2k prior to any real negotiations and it was not month/quarter close when I plan on closing the deal. Plan on heading back towards the end of the month, since the dealer has 3 17 350’s all optioned out the same (different colors, but I would take any of those colors) sitting on the lot and the 18 on dealer order is supposed to arrive Feb 22nd.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I am wondering the same and finding the same. Finding a 2017 is easier than finding a 2018 around me. As someone who negotiates on all sorts of deal, negotiating another deal on my own ride would be just another.

I bought a 17 on Dec 27th. Could have ordered an 18.
But for me. I had a Ford Customer Cash coupon that expired on Jan 1.
Dealer had a 17 that I was happy with.
18 have a slight price increase, Plus smaller rebates and possible no Customer Cash coupon when the 18 would arrive. And the dealer gave me around $4000 more on my trade than other dealers were quoting me.

Also for me, I'm high mileage. All my trucks are usually over what is considered normal mileage and I get dinged at trade in for having high mileage.

So buying a very late model year 17 will help me not be so high in the mileage. Lots of 2017 trucks that have 20,000-30,000 miles already. I'll still be high mileage in 5 years, But not as bad as if I had bought an early 18.

I don't think there is much difference between a 17 truck built in early November or a 18 truck built in December. I'm just not worried about 1st year vs 2nd model year because a late model 17 was already Job 2. The difference of 10 hp means nothing to me when you already have 440 hp.

All things being equal, Buy the newer model. But there are times when a deal on last years left over can be a better deal.

Truth be told @DMc....the 6.7 has made me soft. Since moving to the 6.7, I don't have black stained hands, band aids everywhere and my case of potty mouth has cleared up that I think I could become a preacher (ok maybe a slight exaggeration). My hands are softer and suppler and I can now get a manny without the technicians railing me on bad cuticles.

I feel better now. Thank you @DMc for allowing me this therapy session! I feel a group hug (or kiss) coming on...

So I went in to factory order an 18 as I wasnt quite ready for a new truck. I ended up buying a 17 they had on the lot for $1000 less than the factory order was going to be, plus the 17 had $7500 more options on it that I would not have ordered. The extra options are nice especially the Led lights and the ultimate trailer towing package. It also came with the sunroof.

I wouldn't consider these a first year truck. Most of the motor is carry over, the trans is carryover. It's not like when the 08s or 11s rolled is and they were all new
