Hi All:

Planning on an 800 mile round trip from Washington DC to NE Ohio with my new 2025 F350/HO next week. Engine has 250 miles on mixed highway/street driving, all RPMs. Watched mileage improve from 8 mpg to 20+ mpg over 2 days.

Route is flat, uphill, and downhill (lots of changes). No cruise control. No towing. Planning on activating engine brake controls. Planned speed is 55 to 70 mph.

Questions:

(1) Keep it “light” or occasionally hard throttle the engine?
(2) Final miles driven should come in at about 1,200. More needed, or enough?
(3) Change oil after the trip, or wait for the engine to telll me?

Manual and documentation unclear on all of this. Dealer didn’t really have answers. Planning to keep this truck 10+ years.

Advice appreciated and respected…

Mixed rpm amd throttle usage, but I wouldnt go above 75% throttle until after 500mi. Then a few occasional and short full throttle stabs. After 500 youre fine, but i would keep the spirited driving away until after your trip. The heat up and cool down cycles are good for it. A straight long 65mph run isn't a healthy break in, but youre halfway through the cycle as it is. Definetly stop a few times for a snack or something to let the temperature change and materials contract.

You want the internals to expand and contract during the break in process so the materials will find a healthy equilibrium during wear-in. If you dont, the materials will begin to wear abnormally when you put it through its paces (to what extent and its impacts isnt hugely significant). At 300mi i did full throttle runs on a vehicle and it lasted 200k with 0 major problems. I wouldn't put too much thought or concern into it. Drive it, enjoy it, don't stress over it.

Oil change is up to you. If youre doing it yourself, I would. Its $100 in materials. You get to see what's in there. If not, it's not going to hurt it.

My opinion- how you treat it over the long term has more impact than what you did in a couple hundred miles span.
