Hey fellas quick question for the guys already running the BPD remote oil cooler and changing the oil..

is there anything different that i have to do to change the oil with the BPD kit vs stock??

1. Drain
2. remove oil filter from behind bumper
3. screw in new filter
4. fill up with new oil
5. turn key to on position and off a few times?
6. done?

Cycling the key is to fill the FUEL filter.
I dont have the remote filter kit so i cant give you details on that but everything else is like a normal oil change.

Yep, just like was said; you don't need to cycle the key. You'll want a catch bucket near by when you pull your full flow oil filter since it will be a bit messy. As you get better, it becomes less messy, but you'll probably drop the filter a time or two and get oil everywhere! :D We've all been there before. :thumb: Oh and one more tip: mine takes 4 FULL gallons to top it off and I'm running a bypass filter as well. Yours may vary a bit; a little more or a little less. Keep us posted on how it goes! :D

oh ok thanks for the info fellas!

The big thing I learned was to make sure you got all, (ALL 100%) of old dried mud washed out of the fender area before you go trying to install that new filter. Those suckers aint cheap and I almost cried the first time I got a big ole chunk of dirt to fall off and hit the top......stupid? yes. Will it happen again? No...

I always fill new filter before installing !! Mine also holds 4 full gallons ( no bypass )

I punch a hole in the bottom of the old filter with a punch or screwdriver. Let it drain in to a bucket , remove old filter , then fill new filter up before I screw it on . Then move 5 gallon bucket to under my drain valve to drain engine oil . Best $30 I spent ! I can change the oil without dropping a drop on the floor! Fill up and I'm good to go for another 5k . Also I use almost 4 gallons of oil to do the job .

Genius.

I don't know what my sig pic looks like but it should be a picture of my truck from a side view. I changed my oil when. It was there and it seemed to go really easy. I don't know how to not get the oil on that bar though right beneath it

purchased a fumoto valve for this coming up oil change.. i also used a 5 gallon bucket before.. but once i get to the end of the drain if the wind is blowing it will blow droplets all over the place.. with the fumoto valve im gonna just attach a hose and run straight in the bucket

I just had my BPD system installed, great imput, I'm gonna order a fumoto valve and label my filter to punch it before removing it. Do you remove the rock shield to access the filter?

#12 ·
Ive never removed my rock guard. Its a little ackward getting in their but not bad.
The punchin a hole in the filter is a awesome idea for sure. The other thing I do is I have 3 or 4 very strong magnets that I stick to the sides of my filters. I hope that maybe if their is any metal floating around it will help reach out and grab it.
I remember when I was younger my dad had a oil filter cooler type thing. It was a metal tube with that hinged and it had heat dispersing fins going from top to bottom and the whole thing was held on with a hose clamp. I know you wouldnt want to run something like this in the winter but Ive wondered how much if any it would help in the summer.

I remember those things, had one on my '69 Beetle sand buggy. Made ZERO difference in oil temperature but sure looked cool. I machined out two spots in it for those high strength magnets.

No need to remove the rock guard. Just reach in there and man handle it!:look:

I have an electric oil pre-lube pump so I don't even need to bend at the waist to change my oil. This spring I'll be installing a BPD oil cooler finally since my oil cooler starting to go south.

Nope. Toss that thing. The rock guard provides the needed support for the outer end of the bumper.

^^^Agreed. Mine's gone too. I forgot to mention that I also prefill my full flow oil filter before attaching it. And the punching a hole in the bottom of the old filter is a GENIUS idea. I'll definitely have to try that next oil change.

Shawn- great point on pre-filling the new filters. I pre-fill the full flow any bypass filters when changing.

Using an awl to punch a hole in the bottom of the old filter works great. Makes less of a mess and makes it lighter.

You guys must have never had a filter so tight you had to jab a screwdriver thru it to spin it off, or you would have already thought of putting a hole in the filter lol

#21 ·
I've used BIG Channel Lock pliers... :D

#23 ·
always useda filter wrench. Also if i remember correctly BPD tells you to charge the filter prior to installation.

thread bump from 2 years ago... i was such a dummy on my second oil change around thinking ill be smart and drill a hole on the "side" of the filter to let it drain down into my bucket... little did i know as soon as i made the hole and pulled the drill out it shot about 3 feet out at me and did so for about a full minute as i cursed like a sailor and look at my drive way become fully coated in oil.. LOL

Oh man, that sounds like a mess! I've grabbed the wrong bucket before and ended up overflowing onto the driveway, so I know what a pain it is to clean up that much oil. I now use a huge sheet metal drip pan to help catch that situation BEFORE it causes me a day of cleaning/scrubbing my driveway.

Never had issues getting the BPD filter off. Every time I change the Dieselsite coolant filter it's another issue though. I have to dismount the whole unit and stick it in a vice every time.

No one else has a gravel driveway? Used oils (fryer or motor) do a great job keeping the weeds down.
