This Fall I plan on taking a Core 4r100 and slowly building it over winter. What should I purchase in advance? I was planning on getting a CAT 1 kit from Suncoast. I've never taken a Automatic apart before, only manuals. That's why I wanted to make it a winter project. Any Advice?

I have a Billet Converter, John Wood Valve Body, and bigger cooler to swap from my existing trany. Truck has Stage 1 injectors and Stage 1 Turbo.

That looks like a nice kit. A few nice upgrades. The Transgo Tugger kit is a nice kit.

Also look into the Superior shift correction kit. It is partially used in conjunction with the Tugger. Better drain back from the torque converter bearing / bushing, and a couple other small mods. With the pump pressure mods, this kit may have some of that as part of it already. You’d have to ask them directly.

Pick up a copy of the ATSG E4OD / 4R100 manual, the FSM will also get you there.

Transmission Bench has the most complete set of videos for the E4OD / 4R100. Almost makes it a paint by numbers. They also cover tools needed, or that can be made. Well worth watching them before you do / buy anything to get an idea of what you’re into. They are several hours long. They also sell kits.

The replacement solenoid bodies. I reused my original oem solenoid body, I found it produced better shifts than aftermarket ones. Transgo confirmed this for me.

Torque converter seal, make sure it comes with a Viton seal, or buy one separately. It doesn’t mention it directly.

- I just saw at the bottom of your post you’ll be using a different (John Wood) accumulator valve body. So the tugger kit wouldnt be used. I have no personal experience with the JW, and can’t comment on that part of it. (Side note: I messed around with other accum valve bodies, and came back to the Tugger HD2 kit and set up the shifts they way I like them)

One thing I noted in the various videos or online is the output shaft snap ring. It is called for to be replaced with new in the FSM.

Pick up a nice tub of ‘Assembly Goo’. And locktite bearing / bushing, not called for, but I use it on all bushings etc into housings. Might help the front pump bushing from migrating as well. (There is a double side staking covered in the trans bench videos)

Good luck with it. I’m not a trans expert, but I enjoyed doing mine, and will be doing more.

Last few autos I rebuilt it would have been significantly cheaper to have someone else do it. Maybe that has changed now but I would add it all up then see how much a quality trans costs and see what makes more sense. Not many special tools required and just a book. I air tested everything as I went and my only gripe was a very hard shift with heavy loads. Trans go kits and pump mods were maybe a bit much with a triple clutch TC.
