Best Air Filter?

Been reading up on air filters for the 7.3 as mine needs to be replaced but seem to be getting a lot of mixed info. What air filters do you guys swear by and why?

I have had the riff raff 6637 filter kit with the 6637 filter iinstalled for three years and I recently switched to the Donaldson blue also from riff raffraff. It is an upgraded version of the basic 6637 style filter that is more water resistant and flows better. My old 6637 was still in good shape after three years and I could have easily gone another year before I would have had to change it, and I live and drive down dusty gravel roads all the time.

Notice any differences with the newer style 6637 filter over the old?

I ran the 6637 for about 3 yrs and nothing bad to say about it. I just switched for the S&B for cleaner look (IMO). I also think that it is bit more quiet.

The AIS doesn't flow as good as the 6637. It is basicly what should have come on the truck stock.

First, I don't think that's true. And even if it is by some measure, it's not like any of us really need 100% of any filters flow capacity (we don't have full-race engines).

No doubt about it, it IS the Biggest-Bang-4-the-Buck. It just looks So Mickey Mouse to me, like some teenager did this to your motor :) (I know that's kinda dumb, who should really care what it looks like under the hood, but ya gotta admit the AIS is the nicest looking)

The 6637 filter is a great filter and fairly cheap. I chose the AIS though because:

-It looks better in my eyes
-It filters better (may not flow more but I don't need performance)
-my AIS passes smog since it's an option from Ford
-6637 seems to get dirty twice as fast. Probably doesn't affect performance but I like the visual too.

The AIS ducts in cooler air from in front of the grill. The 6637 ingests warm underhood air. Regardless of whether flow is better or not, cooler air is more important to overall performance than ultimate flow numbers. I went with AIS because I feel it is the best compromise of several considerations: Filtration, packaging, cool-air intake, cost, availability of replacement media, and appearance. (I agree with Ralph on the "appearance" of 6637 installations: They look like a kid did it to his Honda).

The AIS may be fine if you are just doing the basic chip, intake, and exhaust mods, but if you plan on doing injector and turbo upgrades later then you will need more flow than the AIS provides. The 6637 outflowed the AIS in all the tests I have seen. The main complaints with the 6637 are noise and they don't look as good under the hood. I like the sound of the turbo spool and I can't see paying $300 for something that has less flow because it looks better. For the price of an AIS you could have enough 6637 filters to last you 15-20 years not to mention that a replacement AIS filter is $75 vs $35-40 for a 6637. If you don't want an open filter then I think your money would be much better spent on a S&B intake then an AIS. The S&B filters are reusable and flow better than the AIS does.

personally , I'm not worried what mine looks like under the hood as long a it functions . as you can see mine isn't the prettiest. i did replace my stock air filter about every 5000 miles ,and it needed to be. i can go about 15000 miles on the k&n before i clean it. so i feel I'm saving money on the cost of the filter . and really when i take it out , it really can go longer . there is plenty of light still coming through , and i have not noticed anything ,dirt on the inside of the filter. the one in the picture on my other post is a new one i just put in . i have the other one that I'm gonna clean and put back in when i need to clean the other .i haven't cleaned it yet so ill try and post some pictures of what it looks like . now i don't know about any horsepower increases from it. i did hear the air being sucked in noticable.i don't race my truck or run it hard i just work it . truck will run if i kick it down , but thats not my thing . fuel milage is around 16 t0 18 when not pulling trailer . around 12 to 14 pulling trailer .

I put an AFE Diesel Elite Momentum HD Pro DRY S Cold Air Intake System PT# 51-73002-E on my E-99. It is a true cold air intake system and is rated at 1000 cfm according to the factory. The Turbo boost tube did not fit, think it is because the turbo inlet sits lower?

On mine about 16 months ago and love it. I really like not having to replace the stock filter every 1500 miles or so, we live in a really dusty area. It is a good bit loader then the stock intake.

I put an AFE Diesel Elite Momentum HD Pro DRY S Cold Air Intake System PT# 51-73002-E on my E-99.
The first owner (I'm the second, and a good friend of the first) had an AFE with the open top on my 99. It had what I believe is a K&N element with an outer yellow material cover. He lived and ran in the Colorado Rocky mountains in winters. Lots of snow-grime mist in the air. He was running up Vail Pass (12,000 elevation) pulling the airstream and the truck just wouldn't go. He had to pull over, and in frustration called me in SoCal. (I'm a diesel mechanic that works on boats. I've worked on the PO's boats for almost 40 years). I wasn't a lot of help as I didn't know chit about Powerstrokes (still don't much, but have learned a lot of things NOT to do to them by being here), but we went over the basics and he pulled the air-cleaner element, and under the yellow cover the pleated element was completely full of material that looked and acted like dried concrete. No flow. Truck ran better than it had for years after he found that.

Conclusion: Check that element under the cover from time to time. Even if the cover looks just fine.

Having just upgrading to 160/30's I decided to upgrade the air intake too. The truck had the KN cone when I bought it and did well but it was starting to look worn after washing. There was absolutely no issue with the intake wheel showing wear. I was looking into the AIS as it is a nice clean fit. I ended up getting the Riff Raff "Blue 6637" because the material it is made out of is really good and the flow data was very good. That and was nearly $200 cheaper. After the injectors were in I ran the KN for a day or two for comparison then installed the RR Blue.

The sound was pretty much the same though it did have less "air sucking" noise when running WOT or up a steep grade. The turbo seems to spool a little sooner and there was a definite decrease in smoke. The only con I have is the size, IT'S HUGE. I would say if your looking to save money go the RR Blue route, which is a proprietary Donaldson filter, or if that's not a concern and you like a more refined look with a quieter option go with the S&B or AIS. Coming from the open KN cone the intake noise was not a big issue, though if you don't want it I would definitely recommend the AIS as it has the filter made by Donaldson also. I plan on fab'n a new battery / intake box for it as well.

I've run the stock intake with a Green filter for about 10 years. Great filter. This winter in the extreme cold my top housing cracked when the hood slammed shut on my jumper cables when I was boosting someone. So I just ordered a new s&b intake mainly because I like the covered intakes better- less chance for snow to get into the filter. I went with the s&b because that's what I have on my 6.7 and I'm happy with it

I've run both the 6637 and S&B, S&B is a nice kit clean and all contained. but if you ever need to get to your power steering its a battle. 6637 while not contained is definitely cheaper and exposed but has worked great for me for years with no issues. All about personal preference.
