Battery Drain - GEM Module?

I have a 2001 F350 7.3L 6-speed. A few days ago I went out to my truck and heard the radio playing, but the keys were out of the truck. I turned the radio off. The next day I go to drive my truck and of course the batteries are dead. I got them charged back up and started the truck today. After letting it run a little while I shut it off and took the keys out. I used a multimeter to check if anything was still pulling power from the batteries. I found that there was 4.6 amps. I started pulling fuses individually until this went down. I found that fuse 15 (GEM, PCM, ABS, Brake Shift Interlock, Speed Control) under the dash was pulling 3.8 amps and fuse 29 (Radio) under the hood was pulling 0.8 amps. Any idea why this is happening or what my next steps should be in troubleshooting this issue?

How long did you wait before pulling fuses?
Modules can take up to an hour (usually less than half hour though) to go to sleep.

If everything was asleep, I'd start by disconnecting the modules fed by that fuse one by one to see which one drops it.
Once that's narrowed down, you'll wanna disconnect each component on that modules circuit until you find the one with the draw.

Have you had wet weather, or had it been raining recently when the radio came on by itself? Have you noticed wet carpet, or other evidence of water leaks inside the cab? These trucks are known for water leaks, particularly a windshield leak, to get into the GEM and cause weird electrical behavior. Like the radio coming on by itself. Check for signs of corrosion in the connectors and internally within the fuse block. The4 remedy is to replace the fuse block, and fix the water leaks.

Having said all that, I didn't think the 2001 has a GEM, I though it has a VSM which isn't affected by water leaks. Someone correct me if I'm mistaken, but I believe the indicator is mechanical odometer=GEM, and digital electronic odometer= VSM.

I pulled the GEM module and fuse box today. PITA with the clutch pedal right in the way. I found some signs of moisture/corrosion so I am going to clean everything up well, apply some dielectric grease, reinstall and see if the problem goes away.
I did also investigate as to where the leak could be coming from. When I pulled the driver side A pillar it had water trapped inside of it. I took a water hose and sprayed all over the windshield and cab lights for several minutes but couldn't find any leaks. I am going to seal up the cab lights and hope that takes care of it.

The "cab lights" being the source of the leak was a total, wild, 100%, GUESS on my part. I didn't know if you even have them. So was the "A-pillar" as the source, rather than the base of the windshield which is 18" forward of the GEM. If you find something positive regarding the source of the leak, please post back. That's how we learn.

I remember a guy posted pics of the insides of his fuse box. There are a bunch of traces between the connectors, fuses, and GEM internally. He opened it up and took the pics. It looked like it had been on the bottom of the ocean for a year. Really corroded. He bought a replacement, so he didn't have to reassemble his. I don't know if it's possible to get these apart for internal inspection / cleaning, then get them back together, but I'd pay attention to assessing the internal condition before signing off on the repair.

You're making progress. Cool.

Dave, I am taking your advice in this thread and it leads me to do more research online. That is why I tend to agree that the cab lights would be a logical source of the leak because I found other forum posts where people have leaking cab lights. I got those sealed up today, but I still can't confirm the source of the leak.
I decided to go ahead and disassemble the fuse box to check the inside before I reinstalled everything. Unfortunately it ended up being very corroded. In one area the connection was broken due to corrosion. I soldered a piece of wire in to patch it together. Cleaned everything up and got it back in the truck. Everything seems to be working now.
I do still have a 0.100 amps battery drain even after the truck is off with key out of ignition for 1 hour. The odd thing is that I can open the door and it drops to 0.030 amps, but when I close the door it jumps back up to 0.100 amps. I pulled all of the fuses individually and the 0.100 didn't drop. Is this normal or is this a sign that I need to go ahead and replace the fuse box? Found a couple on ebay for about $200.

Lol did you find what it was that caused the electricity suck! I am in the exact same boat here! Traced it to GEM but now what part is it🤷‍♂️ Windows, locks? Security 4x4 still working on it mine always consumes 0.16amps no matter what until I unplug the GEM then it goes to 0.02-0.03 did you find yours?
