7.3 parts differences between 99 & 03 engines

Be doing some research and have found that the later 03 7.3's had more HP and Torque then the 99's. In fact it seems that each year Ford added power to the 7.3's they built.

So first question is:

Is there a thread that already covers this and where is it?

Second if there is not already a thread - anyone have a list of the changes I can make to my 7.3 with stock Ford parts to have the 03 power outputs?

I know that the turbo in my E99 sits lower then the ones in the late99's as my AEF intake boot will not fit on my turbo.

Thanks in advance, Daryl

I don't believe it would be very cost effective to try and reach an 03's power level with factory ford parts. I would say your best bet would be to do gauges and the basic 3 mods (intake, exhaust, chip). A PHP hydra should easily and safely get you above an 03's stock power level and a lot cheaper then switching to factory 03 injectors, hpop, turbo, ect.

AGREED. If you have an E99 that make a Late 99 conversion kit that's kind of $$$ and not worth it.

The big three

Intake
exhaust
chip

$90 for the 6637 intake from riffraff
$2-400 for 4in straight pipe
$325 shipped for hydra chip that comes with tons of daily, high hp, and tow tunes
*if it were me: $300 for edge insight monitor +$100 for egt probe set up.

around $1k after shipping and taxes

EASILY 1/2 of the cost and work to get more than the late model 7.3ls.

vs $2320 for basic late 99 kit:

There really isnt any improvements but only new sensors and some better designed parts and NEW computer tuning. 99 was the last year that had forged rods (some 01 had it).

I wouldn’t waste upgrading nothing but exhaust intake chip... you have more money you say? Turbo, hpop + lines, 4 feed fuel lines, bellowed up pipes, fuel bow delete, transmission. Call it done for awhile.

WOULD YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN HOW THE FUEL BOWL DELETE HELPS THE 7.3 TRUCKS.....AND BY WHAT METHOD THE FUEL IS FILTERED WITHOUT THE FUEL BOWL?....

ALSO.....IS THERE A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE OR SLIGHT DIFFERENCE WITH THE FUEL BOWL DELETE?....

THANKS.....

Riffraff Diesel Early 99 to Late 99-03 Conversion Kit for Ford 7.3L

would be worth it if you where in the market to upgrade your turbo, delete the EBPV, upgrade the up-pipes and install the larger intake plenuims at the same time.

but if your just looking for 250hp(or 275hp manual) then there are better ways to achieve those numbers

Having driven my 2000 Excursion in stock form, my F350 dually with a chip, and my E'99 F250 with a chip, I was quite surprised at the performance of my buddy's 2003 F250 after I put a 2000 forged motor in it, original WW, and 6637 air filter... stock ECM, and it ran great... nearly as good as my chipped dually on an 80 hp econo tune. That was almost 4 years ago, I drove it again about a month ago, and it's still quite peppy for a 300k mile motor that's stock other than the air filter. I attribute it to the factory stock tune alone.

whats the difference between that one and the VDH2(that's the one mine has), never been disappointed with the power but i have never drove any other 7.3l for a baseline lol.

WOW - thank you for all the input and advice!

Should have listed mods on the truck

PO did:

* 6way chip adds good power but I lose lots of MPG because of a right foot issue!
* 4" exhaust
* Banks converter

I added:
* AFE cold air intake advertised to flow 1000 cfm? - but the silicon intake boot to the turbo will not go on because the turbo opening is too low on the intake.
* 6.0 oil cooler.

I am planning:
* on doing new injectors some time next year just because of age along with the sits that go in.
* Have already replaced the injector/glow plug wiring in under the valve covers due to a failure at one of the glow plugs.
* replacing the turbo due to age
* cross over rear HPO line
* 4 line fuel upgrade
* replacing all the silicon bust piping connectors

Need to look into:

* the Riffraff Diesel Early 99 to Late 99-03 Conversion Kit for Ford 7.3L more
* upgrading the down pipes

I have seen videos on taking the spring and plunger out of the center tube in the bowl filter to get ride of the flow restrictions it causes as well as something about aftermarket fuel pressure regulator replacements.

Again thanks for the help! Daryl

If your really wanting to go to the late 99 - 03 setup. I have a pair of the intake plenum for it in the garage. Let me know if your interested and we can figure out a fair price.
