6R140 Flare after Valve Body & Flash

I’ve read through tons of forums and am stuck on what to do next. I have a 2011 6.7L with 120k miles that I’ve owned since 2012. The truck is in very good condition and I’ve taken good care of the truck. I’ve been without this truck since May because it’s been in and out of the shop.
I am having a shift flare and a “hit” from 2-3 gears and a “shimmy” from 4-5 gear. The 2-3 flare feels like it kinda hesitates between the gears and then catches into 3 and kind of knocks when catches. The 4-5 feels like it kind of slips or slides into 5th gear. Ford replaced the valve body (and solenoids) twice thinking maybe I received a bad unit and have flashed the TCM and PCM. I show no DTCs now. What is strange is that the truck will shift perfectly fine when the trans temp hits ~130-140 degrees and has no shift issues after hitting that temperature range.
All my problems started in May when my truck got stuck in 5th gear and was throwing SSB DTCs (P0758, P0759, P0976). Ford said my internal harness shorted and fried the solenoids. Since this happened, I’ve had the 2-3 and 4-5 shift issues. Prior to this, I only had the seldom 2-3 shift issue that everyone seems to experience randomly.

Right. I wasn’t sure if anyone knew of something that changed in the electronics/tables between certain temps in the 135ish range.

It has me thinking it’s maybe a seal issue. Possibly a seal giving me problem until it heats up and then wants to act right. I’ve got a reverse delay too until I drive around and it warms up. Once it is warmed up, I’m good on everything.

As do clearances. I would want to be certain that the transmission main control ID and strategy were programmed. Second, solenoids simply don't fry. Third, giving the time, mileage and the fact that your transmission adaptive tables were reset there could have been clutch wear or damage caused by the B clutch solenoid electrical failure -OR- as I frequently find in this model, the clutch clearances are above specification, and the adaptive strategy simply will not adapt to excessive clutch apply time. At the very least you will probably need the transmission refreshed - new clutches (as needed) clearances set and all new seals. The Direct clutch (B) is one that is commonly sloppy when I am checking them. Actually, any of the clutches with a wavy spring tend to be out of specification due to the fact that the wavy springs tend to flatten some creating excessive clutch clearances. I never replace them and set the clutch clearances nearer to the tight end of the specification. They shift just fine once the drive cycle and the adaptive strategy adjusts. The wave rings are supposed to help with shift feel - I think they are crap.

Thanks. The Ford Dealer in town is not very customer service friendly and did not provide much information on what exactly happened. And now, the trans guy has left so there is no way to get information. But they did say that the internal harness shorted out so they replaced that and the valve body/solenoids.

I did have a separate shop double check the strategy and everything was programmed when my issue started happening. I plan on using this shop going forward

The clutch clearances and how the truck previously learned those clearances prior to the solenoid replacements is something I’ve read on and may be part of my problem.

I wanted to check all the “easy” stuff first before having the trans pulled. Because once it is pulled and he goes through it I will probably have him rebuild with all new parts (unless he’s confident some components are in really good shape) and I know that is going to hurt. I’d rather do it once and be done and hopefully not have future problems.

would clutch clearances not flare up more after the trans is up to temp? I figured most clutch issues would tend to show up once the transmission is hot?

So I’m still stuck and fighting the same issue. I had a shop install a new transmission and I have the same 2-3 and 4-5 shift issues that I’ve been having. Solenoids and flash have been updated and adaptive learn has been reset. Yes, I have had some funny shifts during the relearn, but the 2-3 and 4-5 are the same feel that I had with my old transmission. The old transmission would run around 195 degrees once it warmed up, the new one runs about 165 or so degrees. So, I’m not getting the smooth shifting that I saw when at higher temps with my old transmission that happened around 140 degrees or so.

So now we are going to replace the TCM. My question is, I have a February 2010 build and the TCM is discontinued. So, will a newer model TCM work? It seems these TCMs change every few months and the part number in the outside of mine looks to be discontinued.

Put a new transmission in. The new transmission came with new valve body and all new sensors. After the install, I had the same problem I originally had. It ended up being the TCM had gone bad. I had no DTCs or anything. Everyone was stumped that no codes were thrown yet that ended up being the problem. Replaced the TCM after replacing the transmission and all my issues went away. Transmission was probably never my problem, pretty sure it was the TCM the whole time.
