First timer (please let me know if I have posted in the wrong place or if there is something I need to change)
The turbo on my 2012 6.7 went out last month and when I looked at a stock swap it was over $3K and I read a lot of articles saying it was the weakest link on the 11-14 6.7s so I looked to upgrade. All upgrades were over 3K as well so to keep the spend down I found very little info on moving to the 2015 version, found a slightly used 2015 for $500 and decided to take a chance. There were some limited posts that gave parts list but they ended up not being complete. Here is what I found that you need to complete this job all available from Ford
1. 2015 Passenger side exhaust manifold
2. 2015 Pipe from passenger manifold to back of turbo
3. The 2015 Turbo
4. The 2015 down pipe (both sections top and bottom)
5. Turbo install kit (v-clamps, gaskets, bolts…
6. Lower intake with boots to the new turbo
7. 2015 Turbo oil line
8. 2015 Turbo Coolant line
9. Any gaskets and bolts you want to replace on any of the piping or manifold bolts…
It was a huge pain but I got it done. I am not a mechanic and this is by far the riskiest and most in-depth project I have ever completed on any vehicle. Here are the bad/questionable items. I keep getting a P1249 code “Wastegate Control Valve Performance”. I did not have any directions to complete this conversion so I am not sure what people typically do with the original line that goes to the 2012 wastegate actuator I just know that it is no longer there and so I was advised to cap it off. Right now I have a vacuum cap on it that is working better than the screw I originally was using but the code still comes up. The only other issue is I have a carbon/soot smell entering the cab when I stop the truck. Any likely sources based on the modifications I described?
Please let me know if I can help anyone through this conversion again I am nothing close to a licensed mechanic but it does add power especially from the 30 mph range and up, I saved money, upgraded, and got 99% of the project done correctly.
