6.7 turbo stuck, can it be removed without manifold

I am trying to swap out the turbo on my 6.7 2014 F350

I have a donor truck that I took the other turbo off, was a pain unbolting the manifolds etc, then when I removed it it came away from the manifold as I had loosened the large snap ring that connects the manifold to the turbo

GREAT I thought, this will be a pirce of cake to put in, I can do it without the stress of loosening all the manifold joints.

Undid the whole turbo including the 4 mounting bolts and loosened the large snap ring that connects the turbo to the manifold

now I hit a roadblock the turbo will not budge

should I be able to remove this and leave the manifold section in place? if so are there any tricks?

I've hammered it, levered it, tried just about everything and its stuck fast.

If I have to go back and loosen all the manifold and downpipe connections, I will do that, just wanted to check here with the experts first to see if anyone has any answers.

I read that it may have locating dowels, forgot to check the donor truck, does the turbo need to come up before coming forward? is it stuck fast to the manifold and does that need loosening

any advice gratefully received

Attached are the procedures for 2011-2014 turbo. Alot of its the same except the waste gate. Double check make sure you got all of the steps done. Then rock it forward and twist it about 20 degrees to pull it out of its hole.

thanks for the tips.

Managed to remove it even though it took all day.

BUT, also managed to drop a socket into the opening below the turbo, am just off to buy a magnetic borescope to try and retrieve.

any tips on how to solve this please? of course I won't try to start engine until I find the socket, what are my options if its rolled out of reach?

cannot find the socket, I think it fell into the manifold below the turbo (see picture)

is this terminal for the engine? it is a 4 MM extended 1/4 inch socket

I'm guessing it will either fall into the engine and cause damage, or be sucked into the turbo and cause damage

I hope someone can help shed some light or help find solution

just asked this question to a guy that works for ford and post videos of the 6.7 rebuilds and stuff. Looking at diagrams it appears it would end up in the upper or lower oil pan. Ill let you know as soon as he responds with advice. I'll keep digging in my books as well.

Maybe KAYA will chime in.

He just responded. He has a core sitting in his bay, He will look at it in the morning and respond back and let me know. Hope you can wait a few more hours.

sorry for the delay. Below is what he said. Hope it helps a little.

"Well I had a chance to look at the core today. I used my boroscope and there are a few ledges in there but it pretty much "waterfalls" straight to the upper oil pan. I dropped a few ball bearings in there and one got caught about midway and one fell all the way to the upper oil pan. Is this fellow a gambling man? Does he win a lot of scratch off tickets? If so he can let it ride. lol What are the options? Drain the oil and see if it comes out, remove the lower oil pan and see if it can be seen, remove the upper oil pan and hope it's there (this is a tough job in chassis but can be done...super messy), shine a light in the oil drain cavity (under turbo) and see if the light makes it down to the crank area and hope the socket is accessible by now. If the socket made it to the lower oil pan then it can ride around in there forever and may drain out on an oil change. If the socket is sitting on the upper oil pan it may be ok also as this is a deep skirt "Y" block design and the crank is tucked way up in the block. If the socket is sitting on a ledge midway in the engine it may stay there forever and never present a problem. Lots of "if's" in this situation." -FLMMAZ
