6.0 turbo interchangeability

Good morning everyone. I have a 2004 F250 with 250k miles and have taken the turbo off to do other work and noticed an excess of oil in the charged air tube. I have a spare turbo off a 2006 that had 100k miles. Are these interchangeable?
Thank you in advance.

Remember PCV dumps into air intake before the turbo - oil could be from that. That's what kills boots and plugs intercooler - or so the rumours say [emoji848][emoji6]

Depends if early 2004 - ford changed turbo in mid 2004 and I think there was a different pedastel for the turbo.

Maybe @bismic or @Hydro can clarify

@puna.skeeter

If you have a 06 turbo you need the 05-07 turbo pedestal and then it will bolt right up to your 2004.

"There were 3 different turbine wheels offered in the 6.0 powerstroke gt3782va turbo. Over the years ford attempted to do 2 things while changing the turbo specs... quicker spool and quieter turbo. Those were two big complaints early on. So they first changed to a 13 bladed turbine in 2004 that kept a very similar 72.5x66mm dimension. Then sometime in 2005 ford changed to a 72.5x64mm turbine to increase spool up. So over the years the turbos lost top end power, increased spool up, and got quieter.

2003-2004 10 blade 72.5x66 10 blade turbine (basically a small gt40 turbine)
2004-2005 13 blade 72.5x66 13 blade turbine (larger 13 blade)
2005 - 2007 13 blade 72.5 x 64 13 blade turbine (smaller 13 blade)

There were also 2 different compressor wheels offered. As the turbine wheels got smaller... so did the compressor wheel. This provided even quicker spool up, but sacrificed top end power in the aftermarket performance world.

2003-2004.5 - 59x82mm
2005-2007 - 56x82mm"

The 2003 turbo is the only true 6.0 Turbo - It whistles while it works. Just sayin......

Yeah that's why my wife hated her upgrade from a early 2004 to a 2005 Ex - no more whistle. Have a KC stage 1.5 whistle turbo waiting to go on her Ex. Still collecting other parts required then she can have the whistle back.

With the pickup, even with a stock exhaust, opening the sliding rear window brings it in-cab.

Ok so I already had turbo off so I pulled pedestal off my 04 and it fits perfectly to the supposed 06 turbo. Something is hinky here. The build date of my truck is 11/03 but has the icp installed on the pass valve cover. I am still using the original turbo on my truck and it just turned 250k miles. The only thing I’ve done to it was replace the unison ring and vanes in 2014

The supposed 06 turbo is a reman but is way crustier than mine. I tried to cross the part #’s but results gave me no specific year. The mounting bolts are the same, two horizontal bolts in front and one vertical in the back. Guess I stay with the original for now. Thanks guys👍🏽

If you have the vertical rear bolt, you have the newer turbo. Perhaps someone before you did a late engine swap, considering the icp in the valve cover

While many people have been fine with only two front ones, you may develop a harmonic drone in the exhaust system. I had with my '03. I can't say with absolute certainty if it was the missing bolt or resetting the exhaust, but I did both after getting the drone again with a new turbo.

I knew exactly what it was because I had the noise when my truck was new. After about a year of owning the truck, there was a TSB about loosening and resetting the exhaust and replacing the pedestal if that didn't work. I got the updated pedestal under the TSB.

Mark might have the TSB in his records.
