I have a 2004 6.0 that is blowing white smoke all the time. problems started about a week and a half ago after i went to a different gas station than normal. it started to run rough with no power from a stop but as it got up past 15-20 it started picking up. after i ran through that gas and refilled at my normal gas station the loss of power stopped and now it always blows white smoke, and a lot of it too. the ficm manually tests good with 48.7 volts on pin key on, 48 flat during crank and 48 running. i pulled the egr valve and i had a broken o-ring, i replaced that and cleaned the egr with no change in smoke. brand new fuel filters. im not loosing coolant at all either. no engine codes as well. i have my daughter due any day now and i need some help!! this is our daily driver.:crying::crying:

EGR cooler ruptured, get it fixed ASAP or you will lift your heads.

When my EGR leaked it was very obvious....there was coolant flooded inside the intake. I had a fairly small leak and I only blew white smoke on take off from a stop or startup. But when I pulled the EGR and looked inside there was no way you could miss seeing the coolant inside. SO yah...if you had that large of a coolant leak you would see it plain as day inside the intake. I literally had puddles of coolant....and mine was a small pinhole leak. Plus you can tell the difference between smoke from improperly burned fuel and coolant. Others can describe it better but once mine leaked I could see and smell a difference from the normal bit of white diesel smoke on startup and the white stuff from coolant....or atleast that was me.

Same here. Hung injector but smell wasn't horrible and smoke wasn't dark.

This one, I took to the dealership pronto and am glad I did. Balance and compression came back fine and - one injector and no pistons later - I was back in business.

It makes me tend to suggest that people get smoking issues checked out immediately.

Figured I would just post a pic or two of what white smoke looks like from a ruptured cooler and what the intake looks like. I would agree, for what my input is worth, it is doubtful its a cooler. But..if the OP has never seen what one looks like have a gander at my joy this cold day in March. To me the coolant leak makes smoke that stayed bunched together...was dense and stayed close to the ground...oh yah..and smelled like coolant.
This is just sitting at normal idle.

Good and helpful post.

My smoke from my injector didn't look much different. ...and the smell wasn't sweet, but it wasn't acrid either.

That situation might not be common, but - because a hung injector can make things go from bad to worse quickly - I like to get the point out there. For me... unless someone has experience and without other obvious clues (wet EGR), smoke = shop testing. ASAP.

I have not had a chance to tear into it yet since my daughter was born this morning but the smoke that comes out is a lot more than that. 5 minutes at idle and it will fill up an intersection. I have not lost any coolant at all. And the smoke burns your eyes and nose. I'm going to pull all injectors and look for cracked tips.

Congrats on the new baby! I would guess an injector as well. Do you have access to any software that would allow you to do a cylinder contribution test or similar? That would allow you to identify the problem injector instead of just pulling them all and looking for cracks (that can be very hard to see). Good luck man, keep us posted.

Edit:Glad you found it! Now if I could just learn to look at page 2 before responding!
