Hi All,

New to this section of the forum (I'm a 97 F250 7.3 owner) and looking to get another truck (newer :) ).

There is a 2014 F250sd XLT with 172k miles that I am interested in. I know nothing about these trucks, so was wondering if anyone could tell me something about these trucks, what I need to look for and if this is a good year / model for this truck / engine?

Thank you !

Let's not re-invent too much; There's a lot of information out there already on common failures. Look into that to get an idea based on the generation (2014 is the 2nd generation IIRC). Checkout YouTube for a channel Tech Talk with ARod where he specifically goes through a truck with an eye on what to look for during purchase. Then look at the different model year comparisons; 2015 has new updates; which address issues such as the turbo. Has this '14 had its turbo replaced or "updated"?

What would be a good number for the idle hours
A simple google search [Ford] says "1 hour of idling is equal to roughly 25 miles of driving". Use that as a start but then compare the engine hours to idle hours. Look at some other threads on this.

I believe the 15-16 also got an updated cp4 along with the turbo upgrade. They are the more desirable years in the model range. I would probably look to pay a little less for prior years. I'm under the impression the updated cp4 has a little higher pressure at the rail. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Have a reputable shop do an inspection if you don't know what you're looking at. If the person or dealer isn't happy to have you do it then theres a red flag. Especially considering you're paying for the vehicle to get inspected. It's worth the $ considering the price of the vehicle and/or repairs...

There are VASTLY more that say deleting their truck has resulted in higher mpg than those that say it does nothing for mpg. My concern in buying a deleted truck is WHO tuned it? How well was it tuned? A well tuned deleted truck is MUCH more desirable to me than stock. But without knowing who tuned it....it's a gamble. Sooo...I continue my hunt for a stock truck.

thanks to ALL for your help and suggestions (y). I kept looking and finally located a truck with most everything I wanted;

2014 F350 XLT, 116k miles, long box (8’), completely stock, good maintenance records, all service bulletins complied with, 2 owners, born in Texas, then Georgia (no rust), no oil pan leak, 3.55 rear.

took on my first trip, about 800 miles (empty, highway, not a lot of hills), just over 18 mpg (75-80). It completed regen 2 times, 1/2 way through the 3rd.
