My 06 xlt has the standard radio. Time for a double din.
I did a search and everything is years dated.
While I realize there are many fumble finger diyers out there, one issue that popped up a lot on amazon reviews is many don't seem to shut off correctly like our factory units.
Anyway
The choices are many and downright confusing.
I would like some feedback on what brand members have purchased? Likes, dislikes?.
Thanks

The way you're saying it makes me believe that you think the 06 trucks had a screen from the factory. If that's the case, they obviously didn't

if you're asking for an aftermarket radio and screen and what not, I'm subscribing. I've heard kenwood is a good brand to put in but like you said, all of the posts are years old.

Pioneer I still have all my 4 last vehicles units in service
I move them from my ride to my wifes/boat / camper etc as I sell my primary ride and return them to stock and get a new head unit

those pioneers keep on working ,, the newest dbl din unit I bought has all the android/apple /pandora/xm stuff

u have to wire it correctly to get the retained power and if u have steering controls u may need a module

x2 for Pioneer. Went with the largest screen they have, no CD player. Added backup cam and took out the cigarette lighter down low and installed a usb insert that you can find on Amazon. It has a castle nut on the back and secures it tightly… looks pretty factory actually.

Crutchfeild may be a few bucks more but they are great
and after I did a big install I wasted 4 speakers because my RCA 6 pair of high end cables was mislabeled and fried the 5chanel amp that then lit up the speakers ( smoke)

Crutchfeilds policy let me return all of them for replacements no shipping no nothing
the company that sold me the cables ,, well they just gave me a new rca cable lol

I went with the cheap Taiwan head unit from Eonon. It's Android and does both Android Auto and Apple Car Play. I'm pretty techie and installed the backup camera as well as a trailer camera and a front-facing DVR. It has all the bells and whistles. I can run Torque to keep an eye on my truck.

I don't use the head unit amp.. I went with a powered sub as well as two amps that run the other speakers via the line outs.

Install was straightforward and it sounds great.

Probably depends on your level of comfort.

On my wishlist was to be able to monitor 2 cameras. The truck and the tail end of a 32ft trailer.
Via Crutchfield that pretty much left me with boss. Just to be on the safe side I decided that perhaps a stand alone camera system would be better. With the Boss it is kind of like one of the do it all printers. Works but doesn't do any one thing in spectacular fashion.

I think for the camera system I might go with these folks. Wireless Backup Camera Systems | Haloview

These folks also have some interesting things. Backup Cameras | Mobile DVR's | Fleet Management | Rear View Safety

Now that I have settled the camera question, back to crutchfield for more options.

Just add a video switch and enjoy however many cameras you want on your screen -- handy for "parking close" to have one on the front grille -- also one on the 3rd stoplight to see into the bed, for trailer hitching

I was looking through the RVS site and they offer tailgate latch cameras for the various ford trucks.
Spendy but they have them.

Pioneer makes the better radio tuner & a not as good cd player, Kenwood makes a very good cd player but a not as good radio tuner. Eclipse makes a very good double din navigation unit, Alpine makes a very good all around head unit.I would steer of clear of the lower end head units on the market such as; Sony, Boss, JVC, etc, basically any brand other than the 4 I mentioned earlier.

The nice thing about buying from Crutchfield is that they supply the wiring harness & speaker adapters, they also sell the mounting kits that you will need to install a non OEM head unit in pretty much any vehicle made.

The biggest and most effective upgrade you can do with the OEM stereo is to replace the OEM speakers, a very good cost effective solution is the JL Audio CS series speakers, if you are mounting them in the factory location you can just order the CS-1 speakers as they don't include a grille and trim ring, if you're going to mount the speakers in a location other than the factory location you should get the CS-2 series, they include a trim ring and grille, both the CS-1 & 2 speakers start at around $150 a pair.

That big a difference in sound with new speakers? Obviously I am not an audiophile.
