Hey guys,
I'm new to the forum and joined because my shop truck (1999 7.3L Powerstroke) has been having a ton of problems and I haven't been able to get alot of answers from mechanics. The truck has roughly 150,000 miles on it.

Problem 1. When it is raining out and I have the wiper blades on the truck will sometimes stall and also while driving it will buck like its going to lose power and stall but then it stays running. Mechanics have opened the hood and soaked the entire engine bay while the truck was running with the wipers on and it wouldn't stall.

Problem 2. After the motor is warmed up the truck will leak some oil when parked. Not just a drop here and there but a pretty decent sized oil spot. A local shop up the street told me that it could be the rear main seal so I'm getting that replaced. I've also heard that it's not uncommon for these trucks to leak oil? I'm not a diesel expert by any means so I don't know if that's true.

Problem 3. The speedometer comes on and off. I changed the VSS in the rear differential and it still wouldn't work. I brought it up the street to a shop. The O/D off light was flashing so there was a code that needed to be cleared. They cleared the code, it was the VSS but the trucks speedometer still wasn't working.

Problem 4. Every time I hook a trailer to tow and plug in the trailer lights to the back of the truck, the truck blows a fuse. One time it blew a fuse and the truck wouldn't come out of park. The truck lights also stop working.

Problem 5. Not sure if this is a problem but I was hoping someone would be able to tell me what this is: A beeping sound comes on periodically while driving the truck. No idea what it is. Thought it was seat belt warning but I buckled my seat belt and the sound persisted.

So as you can see there's a ton of problems with the truck. The truck runs and drives fine (except for when it's raining and the wipers are on). Any insight/help would be much appreciated!

for problem # 2, be sure to check the turbo pedestal, and the hpop
and associated lines. check to see if there is oil in the valley. rear
main seals rarely go bad, but when you have a top side oil leak, it
will sure APPEAR as though the rear seal is out.

Thanks. Appreciate the help. I will be sure to check the turbo pedestal. I have been told many things by numerous people. Someone also told me that it could be the oil pan gasket? I have no idea. The truck is currently at the shop now so when I get it back I will check.

yeah, you need to douche all the oil off of the engine and then check
and see where it's coming from. if the valley is full of oil, or you can
see where the oil was, it's more than likely the pedestal or hpop.

obviously you cant do that with the truck at a shop, but you get the
idea.

#1 is the root cause of a cheap parts store CPS

#2 the shop ur taking it to are tards. Rear main rarely leaks. As stated above. Check the valley. If u have oil, it's probably a HPOP system leak. If it's dry, more than likely turbo pedestal o rings.

#3 the VSS is not in the differential it's in the tail of the transmission on top. The sensor in the rear different is for AB'S

#4 you have a bad wire rubbed raw and grounding out where the splice is.

#5 . Could be door chime depending on the year.

For #5 . I don't know for sure on these, but the Crown Vics do it. Be sure the airbag light comes on when you turn the key on. If it doesn't, fix that first. That'll probably do it, but just in the event there's another problem, at least now you'll have a light, and know to check for codes

Problem #4 doesn't absolutely have to be a problem with the truck wiring. In fact its more likely to be a trailer wiring problem if it only appears when the trailer plug is inserted. If it happens with different trailers then the first thing I'd check is whether the plug on the truck is wired correctly. Amateur trailer wiring nitwits often wire the centre plug on a Bargman connector as a ground. Get out a test light and make sure the truck and trailer plugs are wired correctly before you go any further.

Note that if you blow a fuse on the truck and lose your brake lights then you will be unable to shift out of Park.
