03 turbo or kc 10 blade

Thinking about giving my work truck some whistle and a little more top end, problem is I don't want to give up any towing ability as I tow 20k lbs with this truck it is an 06 f450 with 4.30 gears so my thought is with lower gears mayb I won't notice the lag some talk about with the 10 blade. I also have an f250 6.0 that has a billet wheel pmax and I did not like it with stock injectors. What is the best route to go? Is the 06 turbo with 10 blade wheel going to spoil better than an 03 turbo? Or are both going to spoil like a pmax?

Not to experienced with the 10 blade upgrade for stock turbo. If you were going to go that route I would do both the compressor and turbine wheels. Not sure if you would notice much from just the turbine wheel upgrade.

May want to look at doing that diy powermax kit from KC. With the smaller turbine wheel 06 (even if you add the 10 blade) and upgraded compressor of the diy pmax I think it would spool super fast even with stock sticks. Especially with 4.30 gears I dont think you would have the negative effects you had with your other truck with the pmax.

I did KC's 10 blade and billet compressor wheel, and love it so far. It definitely spools faster and sounds great. I do not have any experience with the power max wheel so I'm not sure how it would compare to your other truck setup but mine on stock injectors works great. With a straight pipe it whistles nice just like an 03, if you have questions about it hit up Charlie from KC he was very helpful in helping me find something that I wanted while staying in my budget.

With what you're asking for, the 10 blade turbine upgrade for the 06 chassis would be my pick.

The 06 will spool a bit better because it's a smaller wheel so less energy needed to get it turning. The 03 exhaust housing and turbine is the same as what is on a PMAX and up to most standard S2 turbos. The 05+ turbine is a couple mm smaller, which helps with spool.

The gearing you have now is definitely a big change since your F250 was likely geared with 3.73s, so this F450 wouldn't react exactly the same even with the same turbo....HOWEVER.

If you are already pretty happy with what you have and you're just looking for a little whistle and a little more performance, I would stick with the 06 turbo and just make the swap with the 10 blade turbine. At that point since the turbo is apart anyways and you're going to have it all apart, I'd also recommend getting a billet single plane wheel and having Charlie balance the whole assembly before sending it out to you. That way you just have to put it all together, align the marks, and you have a whole brand new rotating assembly in your turbo that's going to last you for years to come, the hardest thing you'll have to do from that point on is align that damn y-pipe.

Thanks for all the input. I've read mixed reviews on the billet wheel on stock turbo but I agree the time to do it is while it's apart anyway, figure I'll pick up the 360 rebuild kit as well. Is there anything else I can upgrade on the stock turbo that's a worthwhile upgrade while it's apart, billet vanes/unison ring? I wanna do everything I can to offset the lag that the 10 blade wheel might create.

You really shouldn't notice a significant change in spool with your setup going to a 10 blade.

If you can still get the stainless unison ring then yes that's a worthwhile upgrade. Better corrosion resistance and a stronger part in a wear/cracking point. The vanes are fine and only need replaced if damaged....and usually aren't unless you have a failure inside the turbo

Adding a billet wheel, 360 thrust, and 10 blade turbine wheel is a great option just like Nick said. We balance it up as an assembly at no charge.

It will add a little better spool up, and allow for a little better air flow on the top end... but this is not a BIGGER turbo, do don't expect to gain 20-30hp.

With those bigger gears you could easily get away with a slightly larger turbo. KC Turbos has a new stage 1 61mm turbo they just released a few months ago. Specifically designed for those with stock injectors and want to tow heavy without all the extra lag of a pmax or stage 2 turbo. Send over an email if you are interested.

I'm really considering the 10 blade and billet wheel I don't want to over do it and have to worry about egts and all that and I'll don't plan on running bigger injectors. I'll prob shoot u an email here before long Charlie. Here a pic to give you an idea how much I work this thing gross 33,000 lbs and catches a ton of wind. I run down the highway 5th gear tc locked "got it where tow haul locks out 6th" running about 50-55mph @2400 rpm

Last time I checked the kc 2r was sold out ?

I got it in finally. Sounds awesome and spools a little faster it seems. I also flushed my coolant and replaced with rotella elc because I had to fix a leaky egr tube and the truck was due for a flush

Sweet! Any difference in egts or boost psi?
