They should be for back lighting. does the light work? does the guage read EGTs? :dunno:

 

the guage does not read EGT's. i assumed this was why... even though the guy who owned it before me said he bumped the guage when he was installing somethign and it stopped working. he thought he pulled a wire loose or something. ideas?

 

one is a ground that might be the problem i would look at the wires it is not hard you can chase them easy

 

so do they pop put easily? what do i trace them to? they are hanging loose and only about 6" long.

 

one is power 12v acc (switched) and the other is ground it is a light undo it and look if that is all that is all that it runs the other goes to the probe just make shure that they are not broke. i want to say that mine had two more one white one black.

 

i put my light on a switch so i could turn it off when it was in my eyes driving at night

I bet if you turn that where the wires stick out it is a light bulb in which case it doesent matter. the thermo couple dosnt need powe it makes it own milli amps. thermo couple is the EGT probe.

 

makes sense. now that you mention it, that does look like a light bulb clip. dotn know why that didnt hit me earlier with the other guys posts.

so should i clip, strip and reclasp the wires for the thermo on the guage side? or is there a good change the guage is done? could there be a problem with the probe?

 

Trace the wires make sure ther are no breaks or bare wires. With engine hot you should get a voltage reading at the back of the guage if the thermo and wires are good. Not sure on how much I believe it is milli amps. if you se any voltage and guage is not Reading than it is guage.

EGT Works! we put a volt meter to it and it didnt register. but on the drive home it was working, so apparently i either have a loose connection or didnt realize my EGT's would stay so close to 300. 300 - 400 was what i saw n the way home. i havent pulled anything with this yet. when off it rests at 310 so i figured it wasnt working as it didnt really move.

 

now to address youre other problem. You said the EGT probe was behind the turbo. Youre probe should be in drivers side exhaust manafold pre turbo. If the probe is in post turbo you need to add around 200 degreas to what the guage is reading. Post turbo will not give you an acurate reading.:thumb:

 

i thought the same thing, i saw that and just cant understand why they would place it where they did. ill porbably leave it where it is and just add, that way i dont have to worry about plugging the hole in the exaust. ill probably move it sometime, mabey when im doing some other work to the truck, i would prefer to have it in the manifold. why drivers side?

 

Ditto on the lighting thing. It doesn't really matter to a light bulb in which direction the DC is flowing. Hook 12v switched power to one lead, and ground the other. Your back lighting will work then.

I think most people put the probe in the drivers manifold because it's closer to the gauge that way, and requires less wiring (and therefore less loss) between the probe and the gauge. Also, less chance of melting the wiring from the heat off the crossover pipe from the driver's man to the turbo.

Still, if you're reading 300-310 post-turbo, and the rule of thumb is +200* pre-turbo, that's still only 500*. That's pretty cool, so far as I've learned... these things usually run in the 800s, unless I'm mistaken (which happens all the time, no worries there).

 

yea mine stays at 800 to 1000 when you get on it

 

at 60 mines around 400-500 degrees, in the drivers side exhaust header.

 

when i get on it it jumps to about 700 or 800 or so. so this sounds about right. would the red wire from the brake controller be 12v switched? its near my guage...

 

running 70 it gets up around 600-700, towing my cammper at 70 it stayed around 1,100 deg.

 

whats the maximum you can run it at

 

about 1250 for a short time,

 

a couple of minutes? what about the tranny

 

from what I've read anything over 1250 is bad, I believe the trans fluid begins to break down around 230 deg. but you need to double check to make sure. I'll see if I can find something real quick.
