Who has done the hutch mod on their 6.0? Is it necessary like the 7.3? I have to drop the tank to replace the foot because the truck is running empty too early and I plan on doing the harpoon as well. I just don't know if I should replace the mixing chamber with the stainless lines. Any input is appreciated.

The 6.0 fuel system does not have the 7.3 chamber.

But if fuel storage increase is what your after it’s easily accomplished.

One tool makes it easy a hand squeeze pipe cutter. May have a name but here is my Rigid pipe cutter # RC- 2375

Once that top your gonna learn to hate is off reach in and snip off two vent pipes in rear of the tank close to top as possible.

DONE.

I get almost 35 gallons in my short bed 29 gallon tank I NEVER got 26 into.

The changing of the “ambulance fire avoidance” vent tubes is the “Harpoon” mod, applicable to all years.

The “Hutch” mod is the removal of the cold temperature mixing and filter chambers from the 7.3L tank.

the rash of Ford Ambulance fires were all gasoline if I recall correctly ? metal tanks ? But preventing joe user from overfilling his tank and not being able to put fuel into and above the pick up/ sender fitting and hose clamps is not a bad idea IMO

and leaving room for fuel expansion is not bad either


I did the harpoon and get over 50 gallons now


(I harpooned my Titan tank ;-)

I have the titan 51 gallon tank, and the one complaint I have about is the fuel gauge no longer works right. I can drive about a half tank before the needle goes below Full. Also, although I've never done this, rumor has that the after the low fuel light comes on, there's 10 gallons left. I've never filled up more than 35 gallons when I've driven it, so without an accurate gage I do not drive less than a quarter tank. To me the quarter tank is the new empty.

If anyone has a solution that's worked for them, I'd like to know. I've heard programming the PCM to a different size fuel tank does not work.

You are spot on with the gasoline trucks. My GM Master mechanic friend went into a data reading frenzy after he saw me pulling 4” of vent pipes out of the tank.

He even called the GM gods and the final answer was: Diesel don’t matter.
Gasoline expands and contracts wildly with change of temperature.

Toss cup of gas on street: temps climb changes from solid to gas in a minute. GONE

Toss a cup of diesel on street: it’s there for 30 years.

I have run low ( 3 times and thats was not true for me . I see miles to empty and low fuel are accurate last time i ran low put 49 gallons in
driving to the station i had one eye on the road one eye on the fuel psi and a hand on the ignition switch lol

it is just a slight annoyance to drive so far before the fuel gauge moves but i always have miles to empty displayed so i don't pay much attention

Yep, that’s what promoted the design criteria, videos of ambulances burning. Ford ended up buying a whole lot of vans back, too. Entire fleets in some cases.

It carried over to the diesels, possibly due to an over compensation, but you have to also put into context that the diesel tanks have a vent on the top of them, not sealed like the gas tanks. We haven’t seen a big issue of diesel spills, but there are a lot of things done under caution. There is a one way vent valve, a small plastic one.

I’ve Harpooned two of my trucks.

Harpooning is one of the best mods you can do IMO.

I actually use more than one vent valve on mine and i use a two way vent / intake fitting

psi releif if it hits a certain pressure but let's air in anytime mounted super high in the bed just Incas i over fill I want the filler to be the low point not the vent fitting

it was all in an attempt to get full flow fueling without auto shutting off the pump at the big rig station lol
