well i was towing a jeep on a car hauler to go wheelin and my buddy with a chevy 2500 p/u with a 6.0 gas motor can was hauling the same load. his gas truck can kick my butt easily. my psd was getting barely 10mpg and i had no power in the hills. in the hills the gasser would blow right by me. ive only had this truck for a week and its my first diesel too.

this time i was hauling one jeep, the plan is to haul two jeeps on a double trailer but there is no way this ballless wounder could do it. i have another friend who has a cummins and its wayyyyyyy better than mine.the cummins will **** and get in the hills with two jeeps behing it. it will blow the gas truck away.mine loses speed on small hills. my truck only has 80k on it and runs good unloaded but i still only get 10mpg. where do i start and what to check. i am a certified master mechanic but have NEVER waorked on a diesel before. i have a whole shop at my disposal with a modis scan tool too.

is this completely normal or somthing wrong?

sorry if im an idiot but im real disapointed and could use some advice.

Do you have gauges? Are you pushing any boost at all?

no boost gauge yet. i just bought the truck. i know there is boost but dont know how much. you can hear the turbo spool and it pulls hard when unloaded but when loaded it is a dog. will a scan tool show boost pressure?

with a 7.3 id be checking into how much fuel preasure you have and if you have any boost leaks.

modis will tell you. the data is manifold guage pressure i think. check it for codes while you are there thats the biggest help. you should be right there with the cummins.

if that truck ran right that gas 6.0 would not even think about keeping up with you on a hill.pull codes and run the truck with the data stream.that will give you boost and other #s also

I towed a 15,000 lbs trailer at 75 and 70 on hills not giving it more than half throttle maybe. I also got 14 mpg doing that and 19 unloaded on the freeway

somthing is wrong, my truck will get 20 to 22 mpg unloaded sounds like you might have a boost leak or maybe a fuel problem.i assume it has a new fuel filter.i have seen plugged fuel filters make a truck barley move.if it does you need to also check fuel pressure.but i am betting on boost leak.

My suggestion is to get a set of gauges and a chip or programmer. The programmer will give you codes.

i have a edge programmer that i run mainly on stage 1 custom intake,03 pcm,4 inch straight pipe.but i do not rod the **** out of it very often.if you take that programmer off of stage 3 you will get better mpgs but you also have to keep the foot from bringing that boost up.my last tank was about half interstate and half city and i got 20 mpg.and that was in colorado driveing up mountain passes.

no smoke ever out of the tail pipe.

i dont need a programer. i have a 10 thousand dollar machine for data stream, codes, programming, 5 gass analyzer, scope, ect.

if buying a (chip/programmer) is the cure than that is just polishing a turd imo. it should do way better than this. ill post more on the findings tomorrow

If that p1670 code was continuous code i would say poss. an IDM problem. May still be.

Give a little more info on the towing scenario? How much weight? Were you in O/D or 4th?

Without know how much boost your making there is no way to begin to know where to start looking, if your just cruising up to the hill before you start givin it the juice, with your gear ratio, then it will dog down, especially if your in O/D, give the truck a little head start before you hit the hill, once you get below about 2200 to 2300 rpm's on that truck you will be below the optimum towing rpm for those gears.

Putting a chip on the truck will definately make a huge difference, your not polishing a turd, you merely getting the truck up to its capabilities from the lid Ford put on it to make it meet the emmision guidelines. If there is nothing actually wrong with the truck and you throw a chip on it, with the results you get, you won't be polishing a turd, you'll be polishing something else....

ok update.

everything and i mean everything is in spec as far as the truck is concerned.

mid michigan performance diesel steped in to help out. the shop owner daryl found that programming from the dealership was corrupt and "retarted". he then put a diablo chip in it and then we took it for a drive while watching the scanner. i will be honest at first i thought na this isnt going to work there is still a problem. well he knows his diesel trucks thats for sure. this thing is purely amazing. i went from 10.2 mpg to 21.2 mpg(empty) and thats from the pump not the overhead console!!!!!! the power is stupid awesome and its only on the 50hp setting for towing( cause thats my goal).

basically the fuel pulse width was way of from the factory programming and it was holding the truck back alot. i do have a touch too much backpressure so i need to look into a free flowing muffler or straight pipe it.

mid michigan performance diesel saved my life because i was already at the dodge dealership looking to trade this in. now i love my blue oval

thanks for all the help and support for figuring this out. ken.
