What did you do to your 7.3 Today?

Well I know the 6.4 guys have a thread like this but I've never seen one for us 7.3 guys, so I figured I would start one.

So like the title says what did you do to you 7.3 today? Maintenance, performance, washed the windows, whatever.

I tested the coolant and found that it was in need of a DCA additive in the coolant. So I went to the truck stop and got a pint of DCA and a 5" band clamp. Put about half the pint in the resivor and I'll see if its any better tomorow. As far as the band clamp goes, I finally got around to fixing my tip that was held on with 3 tack welds and got a good clean clamp on it.

So what did yall do?

I put in a new class V receiver hitch, the difference from stock is quite a bit more beef. Need to figure out how to secure up the 7 pin as now the OEM connector will hit the new receiver tube due to being much fatter than OEM.

That's the same hitch I have on my 7.3 and 6.0. they are quite beefy.

Truck is back to work for some mobile jobs with fleet accounts. Had a nice 2 months spree of no goosenecking around lol. We had a huge long spring too. Didn't even really hit summer weather till the second week of June. This is gonna be another short summer lol.

I have been trying to get the trucks oil changed for two months too. It is still gonna be right at or under 5k miles but time has been flying. 14k four-post lift is doing amazing too. Had to do some adjustments after using it for a bit but well worth every penny and probably took me 10hrs total over 2 days to put it together from unbox to bleeding the system. Instructions on some of the stuff was bonkers but got it without breaking anything so far.

x codes from ford if you just want a normal like 2.5in level kit look., if not any brand works. I have had procomp on the front of my truck since 2016 and oem originals on rear from 1999. Ive ran superlift, prcomp and rough country. (rouch coiuntry is ok) superlift was little rough but BDS, Zone are good and another is deaver, very $$$$ but top of the line too.

I pulled the 238/100 injectors out (mainly because I had to replace my Injector cups) and put in a set of 200/100's for some testing. I didn't build the 238's and always had a slight idle/rpm surge. These 200's idle perfectly at only 500-520icp.

Since I put the new curt hitch on the OEM trailer harness bracket that screws into the bumper doesn't work anymore it is too close to the hitch now. I bought this bracket on etrailer and it clamps to the hitch, so far so good, I also got a chance to go in and tighten and check all connections on the harness. I also added a Prodigy P3 brake controller while I was messing around to replace the 20 year old one in the truck LOL

Put my 238's back in. I'm very happy with how well the 200/100's ran. Typically not a nozzle size I would recommend for a 200cc injector, but that is what the customer wanted. Normally I'd put a 30 or 80 tops to keep fuel atomization better and lower EGT's.

Changed my GPCM (California emissions truck) this weekend. Appears to have fixed the issue.

Hadn't been driving the truck much as it has our truck bed camper on it, and I have a short commute to work so don't drive it a ton, but did need it to do some bush pulling duty (having the camper on for that is awesome BTW).

When we were pulling bushes a few days in a row, the first day I got a CEL after starting. Batteries were a little weak so though maybe that had something to do with it. It did start a little funky. Checked CEL at the end of the first day and came up with all 4 driver side glow plug codes. Well, thats pretty suspicious. I did new glow plugs, valve cover gaskets, new UVCH, all motor craft, within the last 20k miles so was pretty confident that wasn't it. Especially for all 4 to go bad at once.

There is a troubleshooting guide for the GPCM, i basically just did the check of each glow plug, they all ohmed great (supposed to be less than 5 ohm, ideal is 1 ohm, mine were all around .7 to .9).

I found 2 forum posts with the exact issue as mine, both we're GPCM in the end, so decided I would go that route. Dealers around here 220 pre tax, so ordered through riff raff. Got it changed over and so far so good! Had to charge my batteries as they were pissed, but started like I remember and no CEL. My abs light is on but pretty sure that is from the batteries getting very low, should clear up once I drive it.

Since I was ordering from riff raff, but the bullet and orderd a new turbo wheel as my zf6 truck with hydra loves to turbo surge up any hills, even on the 20+ heavy tow tune so it's time tovet that addressed. Got a 360 rebuild kit as well.

Going to find some up pipes and do it Ll at the same time, not looking forward to that job but should make the truck really great for a long time!

IF,
your truck is going to sit idle for a good while,
ALWAYS put a Battery Tender on it.

Low battery voltage can throw codes, ask me how I know that one.

I now, automatically plug in the Battery Tender when the truck gets back home.
Drive it tomorrow? maybe, more likely next month, I am 80 and long ago retired.

That way, the batteries float at 13.3 all the time....
2 days ago, needed to go meet with friends for a Meet 'n Greet, truck had been idle since I got home from Utah a month ago..... it was coolish when I woke up, below 40*F so I plugged in the block heater.. it ran for 4 hours because I fell asleep again ;) , us old foggies do things like that.

But, when I started the truck, that 7.3L was rarin to go Now!!!

Trucks jsut been running good for last 4 years lol.... The horn was going off at 1am last week. Had to disconnect batteries. Discoered I recently and i mean like in the last day before the horn i had a windshield leak. Truck is gonna get new windshield seal and or whole new windshieled and then looking for a GEM because I have to wait to get my truck back to see if mine is good/saveable. Other than that gonna get maybe six 50lb sand bags to throw in the bed. I love having a canopy even if my better half says it looks like an old man truck lol.

Replaced my dying oem starter with a new reduction gear beast. Adjusted my steering box pressure to take out some steering slop. And swapped my halogen headlight bulbs for LED's.
I ordered 2 new Odyssey batteries to replace the 13 year old Diehard Platinum P2 AGM batteries. The old ones seem to be still working well, but the age was starting to concern me.

I'M CURIOUS.....WHY DID YOU GO WITH THE ODYSSEY INSTEAD OF USING THE DIEHARD AGAIN?....

From what I can find on the www, the Diehard is now owned by Advanced Auto Parts. Clarios LLC is now making the Diehard AGM battery now. It no longer has the came ratings as the Odyssey.
