California just announced that there will be a reduction in electricity availability through the weekend and ask people not to charge their EV’s. Guarantee that any blackouts won’t be in wealthy areas.

The distance possible from a full charge in ANY MAKE of EV is simply thrown out of the window the moment that you turn on the air conditioning or the (even more power hungry), cabin heat. From what I've been able to pick up in my reading, in most cases, turning on the heat will cut your driving distance by anywhere from 15% to 40%, depending on. Model and temperature.

Also, it seems ironic that just 2 days after Emperor Gavin Newsome announced his fantasy concerning the outlawing of sales of fossil fueled vehicles in California, he announced that everyone that CURRENTLY owns an EV should NOT charge it between the hours of 4:00 PM and 9:00 PM for the foreseeable future in order to lighten the load on the power grid and reduce brownouts & blackouts.

There have been a few articles written about the wait time. And it depends on the capability of the charge station. On a long trip, it might add days to the travel time.

And, of course, the discussion about when the battery needs to be replaced; cost, availability, and recycling/disposal. The last often has the rebute, well, by then, we have figured it out.

LOL. They said that about Nuclear power plant waste.

The physics just don't work, at least for vehicle mounted solar cells.

If you covered the hood, roof, and rear deck of a Tesla with photovoltaic cells, I'm betting a full charge would take a week or more.

That's my off the cuff guess. I'm too far into Saturday night to do the math.
That wouldn't be bad. Every little bit helps. I have vehicles that don't get driven for weeks at a time.

They make nice golf carts.

If I got an ev super cheap, I would try it out.

I've heard the towing performance sucks.

I would be inclined to buy a plug in hybrid.

Is there a plug in hybrid with at least a 5,000 lb towing capacity?

Our rusty 2006 Jeep Liberty CrD has a decent tow capacity - 5,000 lbs. I'd like to find someone to swap a rust free body onto our drive train or something. Our drivetrain is good for another 100,000 miles.

Without going through and quoting a bunch:

  1. Doesn't go very far
    1. Yup and the technology is in its infancy. I'm not saying this as an attempt to clutch my electric pearls but I'm sure the first folks that "converted" from horses to automobiles said the same thing.
    2. Follow-up is that in current tech, we're focusing on the wrong use-case. As others have said, short range commuting is the big thing.
  2. Charging infrastructure
    1. Same point as above. Give it time. Doesn't make it suck less now but "it sucks now" doesn't mean it shouldn't be perused and developed.
  3. The high gas prices are doing it
    1. Put the tinfoil down and slowly back away
  4. WTF California
    1. Yeah....that's kind of typical for a lot of things. "here's a big change with no real plan to get there". However, there has to be pressure or incentive from SOMEWHERE to get the ball rolling. Absolutely not-ideal but if it gets the conversation going, then at least there's some merit to it....hopefully.
  5. Cut (insert pollutants)
    1. This is an argument they've really latched onto for some reason and I fekkin hate it. Both EV and ICE have production related pollution issues and there's so many other reasons to try and increase EV application other than that.
Your comparison between this fiasco and the original car vrs. the horse and carriage doesn’t work at all. For the main reason that NOBODY forced anyone to switch from horses to the automobile. Not then, not ever.
I have zero problem with technology or it’s advancement but when someone tells me that I have to buy this or that tech then I have a problem with it. The last and as far as I know the only thing the government forced people to buy was Obamacare. I don’t do well with anyone telling me I have to spend my money on something THEY want me to buy. If THEY want me to have it then THEY can give it to me. Otherwise STFU.
If you want to see why this is being pushed follow the money. It isn’t about the environment, that’s just their cover, they are doing this for control over the peons and forcing people to support their stock options to make them richer.

Agreed. They run the power grids so if they want us locked in our houses (cough cough plandemic) they just shut off or limit power. Force you to go electric then make it so you can't charge it.

We found someone's hot button! My comment was more on the merits of the technology and all the gripes folks have with it. It never had anything to do with validating California's approach. In fact my last two points agree with you that Califonia's doing the dumb and the crap about the environment is a joke (which is why i'd wish they'd quit using it).

So I'm not sure why you're spun up about it.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to come across as spun up. I was just saying that their approach is fubar. Sometimes when I get to typing I run off into “these things piss me off” mode without meaning to. My bad.
Edit: I will say that the Government telling me I have to purchase something is a hot button issue for me though so that’s where I went off the rails ;)

lol, no worries. I can get the same way and recognized that. Was hoping the poking came across as light-hearted.
