I have 2005 F-250 Lariat FX4 and it has just recently started to make strange noises when turning sharp at low speeds. It is making a klunking noise which sounds like its coming from the rear-end. Before the noises started, I put the truck into reverse and was pulling out of my parking lot on a very cold morning. The truck made a "klunk" noise. It also sounded like that there was a ting noise in there too. Well, this has not happened in a very long time. In the past, when the truck made the klunking noise when turning it was the tie rod end (which is replaced now). I was talking to my dad about this and he said that it could possibly be a U-Joint. I read on another post that someone was able to grab the drive shaft and said there was obvious play in the shaft. I do not have any play in the shaft at all. When turning I cant tell exactly where the noise is coming from. It just sounds like its coming from the rearend. Can anyone please help with this issue? I hope that someone can give me a hand with this. Thanks guys. :icon_ford:

Mine kinda does the same thing it shudders when turning sharp and does it even more when its being strained. I wanna say its the limited slip i've been meaning to change the diff fluid and put some more friction modifier in but haven't gotten around to it.

A clunk and a Ting indicates wear on the driveline. Usually i"ll see this on rear ends, more specifically the spider gears. But being a LSD you usually dont see wore out spider gears like you would an open. First thing is i would check the fluid level. Low fluid will do that. Then I would pull the cover anyway since it needs a fluid change and inspect parts for wear and metal on the magnet. With both tires off the ground I like to spin one tire and hold the other to see how much wear is in axles/spidergears. If your LSD is still ok you shouldnt be able to do this, thus you can probably rule out spidergears. But Your LSD might be worn out allowing it to act like an open. With the Trans in Nuetral you can also check for ring and pinion backlash. Without looking at a book , they are usually set around .010". Check all U-Joints for play / rust around the cup seals and leaking grease. Usually if something is really worn out you can replicate the sound just about everytime by going from rev to drive with your foot on the brake.

** Sometimes on very cold mornings i'll hear this too, nothing to worry about. Its due to being cold and all the oil draining off the gears And not lubricating properly. Once you start driving it'll be fine.

Now the noise when turning sounds like the Front end. Jack up the front end with the hubs unlocked (the hubs are unlocked arnt they ?) spin the tires to make sure they dont turn the axle shafts. We just had one in the shop that the inner axle bearing (needle bearing) was so bad the axle was in a bind and didnt let the hub unlock. With both hubs unlocked and tires spinning freely should eliminate everything inside the axle housing axles and u joints.

Sorry I haven't replied back on anyones post. I've been deployed and busy as hell lately. DanTech, GREAT information about the front and rear end. As i said in the original post, I replaced the driver-side tie-rode end and it is making similar noises now from when it was before I replaced it. Anyways, I'll start with the front end. We had some serious fires here in Oklahoma City and I had to take a horse trailer to rescue some horses from the brush fires that took over one of the outer cities from OKC and as I was barreling down the road, I was hearing a whining noise from my front drivers side wheel. Also, it sounds like theres a couple pebbles in there. I have pretty much decided that it HAS to be those bearings. After I just read what you said, you may have just solidified my thoughts. That would explain the noises I hear and that would also cause the noise when turning. Rear-end: I havent checked the Dif fluid yet. I will do that when I get off work today. I havent had any issues what-so-ever with it now that its warming up. I had an idea that it could be that the gear box wasnt oiled right after I reversed. So what you said explained that. The clunking noise while turning has definitally been narrowed down to the front drivers side wheel. I plan to replace the steering gear box on my truck on my next payday. That too needs to be replaced. I may PM you up when I replace that just to see if theres anything special I should know about before I replace it.

I had the same noise coming from my rear differentail. Turns out that both axles and the lockers and pinions were bad. Also the carrige bearing was bad as well. I am having new axles and pinions and detroit lockers installed as well as a new carrige bearing and u-joints. Sure hope this fixes the problem. Hope this helps you out.
